Bottom line: Ivy Taylor is a sad placeholder and will likely never have a real shot at winning an actual Mayoral election, especially after this. The other members of the council I have few nice words for and will be voting accordingly next election.
Good deal. I'm glad we have different opinions. It's what makes the world go 'round.

Embarrassed about what? There were some good amendments made last second before the vote and neither Uber and Lyft will cease operations.

I'm embarrassed about something in this thread but it's not the council vote.

Btw, why would an entire city have to be embarrassed about the actions taken by ten people? Lazy misdirected anger is really embarrassing.

By the way, Portland is trying to force out Uber.

I'm all for increased competition, but I really don't like the way Uber or Lyft entered San Antonio. This whole concept of "ask for forgiveness later" really irks me. Work with the city, gain their support, and THEN enter the market.

I think there is room for compromise here - eliminate some of the regulations on the cab companies and verify that the insurance on the ridesharing companies is valid (yes, I know that Uber and Lyft have an umbrella policy, but I've also heard it questioned).

I like Lyft (not a fan of Uber). I just don't like the way they smugly burst into town.

Used both and I will never use a taxi company again unless they are both forced out. Does anyone know why we as a city are using the most stringent ordinance in America?

It's not the most stringent ordinance. The hyperbole is crazy.

Because all but two city council people voted to enact the ordinance. It's pretty obvious that the rest are either out of touch, cowards or in the pocket of the taxicab monopoly, or a combination of the three.

Both sides spent a ton of money to make their case in the media. This morning's newspaper contained a double full-page ad from Uber and a single full-page ad from Yellow Cab.

If they're spending that kind of money, you know that there's a lot of money at stake.

Did you read your own link?

Quote:
Laura Hammond, spokewoman for the city department that manages the licensing program, said Uber's appeal wasn't surprising.
"We're going to keep working on looking at ways we can improve and update the code," she added.
The city is weighing its first policy change to its public passenger vehicle program since 1992. The proposed change would allow smartphone apps to display and charge fares as the code now only allows taxis to charge the posted minimum or fare calculated by the meter. It also opens the door for the city to change its rules to explicitly cover the ride services.
