safe vacationing in june (to rent, hotel, cost)

hey everybody! The hubby and I are planning a weeklong vacation in june. We have 2 small children and this will be the first "grown-ups"only vacation that we have had in 3 years!! I am so excited! ! I was wanting to stay near the riverwalk of course but was looking at some of the cheaper motels liike days inn,etc.. but ive read bad things about most of them. For example some say that they wouldnt walk around at night which is when well be out. Im looking for someplace nice and safe thats not gonna cost 200$ a night. Preferably with a balcony because my husband smokes and i cant stand the smell. I welcome ANY and ALL vacationing advice

I haven't speant a whole lot of time in downtown (I just moved into suburbia) but what I didn notice while I was down there was that it's very typical of most cities downtown. You have your beautiful tourist attractions and 1 block over is ghetto. If you want to be at the Riverwalk your fine but if you want to be a few blocks out then you have just given up that safety sphere. If you don't want to spend so much on a hotel room and you want to be safe too then you'll have to go further out of the city proper, preferably north - northwest since south - south east in just about any city is not so good. Any hotel off the 10 or 281 outside of the 410 loop is probably what you are looking for but then you're going to have to rent a car. If you were already going to rent one it's not a big deal, if not well then it's not worth the money you'd be saving by getting a cheaper hotel room.
