City/county surveyors have already been out to the ranch. It is all the Steubing family property. They are being squeezed by the city who is using imminent domain. Old Man Steubing doesn't want to give in, but the city wants the Hardy Oaks connection. The Steubings are citing a family cemetary along the proposed route as a delay for the road work, but the estimate that I heard is 3 years til completion.

Very interesting. Sounds like you have good connections to get this info. That being said - I am really surprised that the city doesn't complete the section on the north side of the ranch. It would at least begin this project if it to take place that soon. It appears as if the city already has the land needed and a couple of the neighborhoods have already been connected with an intersection where Hardy Oak would cross.

KB no longer has the Liberty or Estate line on their website although you can find related floor plans in other communities across the US that KB still builds. They just bailed on San Antonio for their high end product. They still build plenty of nice homes (nicer than the Liberty/Estate) in other parts of the country. The ones on their website now are the Trails and Empire line. They feature some but not all of each collection of floor plans. The same two sets of plans are built in The Woods of Alon and The Trails at Herff Ranch - the other two "premium" KB communities in the San Antonio area. So far - the Trails collection is outselling the Empire collection - probably based on price.
Here are the break down of the two lines of houses:
Trails -
The Chisholm
The Overland
The Montana
The Shawnee
The Great Western
The Old South - the current model home
Empire -
Ottoman
Austrian
Russian
Persian
Roman
British
Personally I wish KB had built one of the Empire collection for their model home. I am not sure why they didn't do that. It is the higher end product of the two and has a slightly wider footprint (45 feet versus 40 feet for the Trails) and looks better over all. The one difference is that the Empire has a standard three car garage either three across or tandem and the Trails you can add a third bay which actually brings the width across the front to 50 feet which is where the model is.

Yes - and I was glad to see that the house in question opted for the over sized two car garage. One of the other houses has just a two car set up making it look even narrower. The one by the old model has the bump out which adds just a little bit extra architectural appeal and width which helps overall. I will say - that I do like the side profile of these one and a half story plans. They avoid completely the big box look of similar square footage Hallmark floorplans. And actually I do not find the overall look that bad at all. Yes it is much smaller than the neighborhing house (and like you said - those home owners are very smart!) but assuming they picked a nice classic brick and an upgraded front door - it won't come off looking cheap. Which it isn't cheap...that house with the porch and extended garage still probably runs in the high $200K range...which means they are at 50% of the cost of their neighbor (at list price anyway...).

At one point, I am sad that Steubing is going to lose his land. In a way, I thought it was good that he was holding on to his land. But, I must also say that I am happy that eventually I will be able to drive on Hardy Oak from Wilderness Oak straight up to Costco.

Unfortunately, I can't afford the Quarry as it is out my price range...but congrats to those of you who can!
We were going to build out in Herff Ranch, but unfortunately, we had some problems with KB and had to back out...no, I am not going to bash KB...we had a bad experience and one too many things went wrong but that happens sometimes. We don't hold grudges.
I think that they have gotten sooo much better over they years and are building very nice subdivisions...and KUDOS to KB for leaving TREES in their neighborhoods rather than plowing everything down.

Just curious which section of Herff Ranch were you building? What floor plan?

One of our baby sitters lives in Stone Mountain - so connecting Hardy Oak will be convenient for us...but we like not having traffic. We knew that would change eventually.
