Question Relocation!

My husband and I are possibly moving to the San Antonio area, in the very near future. He has interviewed for a company there and we are awaiting to hear the possibilities from them.

I am from a small community (think less than 500 people, no stores/streetlights) near Tupelo, MS (yea birthplace of Elvis Presley). My husband is from Sweden and moved here 3.5 years ago. He is used to large amounts of people and large cities, whereas I am not!

I am an CLPN ( I believe they use CLVN, in Texas) and work in the country's largest rural hospital in Tupelo (NMMC).

I have 2 teens, one who would be making the move with us, and is currently a sophomore in High school and a current Senior with too many scholarships to give up to move to Texas for college.

I would like to know, what can I expect as far as electricity, water, sewage garbage, phone. What internet connections are available? What cable companies? or is satallite a big thing for TV there?

What are the hospitals like? Are there any nurses who subscribe to this board who would be willing to give me the 'low down' on good places to work? Can I use my IV certification skills in Texas? What are the payrates like?

My son is very involved in the high school marching band and symphony. He plays snare (and a few other percussion instruments) with a background in corps style marching. What are the high schools there like?

Is there any certain neighborhoods we should not look into? Any we should definitely check out? We are considering renting at least the first 6 months, as we have a home here we need to sell, and my children will stay here until summer with my dad, who is also considering relocating with us.

Basically, if you have read all this, you will see I need HELP!!! Any help, tips, suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help!

I'll answer your basic use questions. As far as cable and internet there are multiple options. For cable there is Time Warner, at&t, GVTC and Grande. Cable is far and away the most common household followed by of course satellite which is of course your standard DirecTv and Dish. For internet you can go with Time Warner, at&t, GVTC and Grande.

For water, you'll either have SAWS (San Antonio Water System) or Bexar Met. Here are the rates for SAWS and Bexar Met:

http://www.saws.org/service/rates/resident.shtml

http://www.bexarmet.org/files/financ...esidential.pdf

Electriciy will come in the form of CPS (City Public Service).

Garbage service and recycling service:

You are wise to rent before you buy so you can get oriented to the traffic flow/congestion and decide on a location that will be close to both your jobs. You don't want to spend hours commuting everyday to work and back. Where will your husband be working or can you reveal the location? Churchhill and Clark are good high schools and alot of decent areas to live close by. You will probably be making more money as an LVN in SA. Try some temp agencies to get your feet wet before you commit to anything. There are alot of different type opportunities so it depends on your preferences. SA is just a little town of over a million people so you will feel right at home.

HAHA a little town of over 1 million! I think I like the idea of a temp agency for a bit, with so many hospitals in the SA area, I am sure people have all kinds of opinions, so yea, working in each of them might give me some idea of where I want to end up. I found the Churchill website and checking out the band now, I will now look up Clark to see how they are and let my son see both, Churchill seems HUGE, compared to the band here.

Any temp agency you recommend?

Thanks

San Antonio ISD is just one of many (about 15) different school districts in the SA metro area. In terms of size, SAISD is the third largest school district in SA. The first two being Northside ISD (NISD; 85,000 students) and North East ISD (NEISD; 65,000 students) in that order. Churchill is a high school in the NEISD and can be found at their website.

This is NISD's website:

The Boerne HS Marching Band is very accomplished. They were one of 25 4A schools in Texas to qualify for the State Marching Band competition, and they are definitely corps style. They also have students that have competed for and won positions in the Texas All-State Band...if you aren't aware, this is the top accomplishment for an individual in HS band and will cause lots of interest from college bands.

Many people who work on the North side of San Antonio commute from Boerne and other neighborhoods between the two. You might look into that area.

I have a friend that is a nurse and she works for a temp agency called Igenesis or something like that and she likes it. I don't know how much LVN's make in SA but I think she makes about $25 or did she say $35 an hr (sorry about my alzheimers). Alot of people that work in the medical center area live off of Babcock but don't know what highschool the kids go to in that area. Sorry I cannot be more specific. I remember seeing a thread about temp agencies and there were a few nursing agencies mentioned so might want to look for that thread. Also you can look at homes for sale on MLS if you go to mysa.com and click on real estate. You will need the zip code or name of neighborhood you are interested in. There was a thread about another website called Zillow which is supposed to be useful in buying a home. Good Luck!
