Traffic: Alamo Ranch to Ft Sam Houston
Hi! Was wondering if someone could fill me in on what traffic is like coming from Alamo Ranch to Ft Sam Houston. I'd need to be to work around 8am and would leave sometime around 4pm.

At least a hour, each way, currently.
Once they "shift" the services from WHMC that are due to relocate to BAMC and adjoining facilities, the traffic will be a lot worse.
I am most grateful that my retirement matches up almost perfectly with the "BRAC" plans...according to when my section is scheduled to make the move. However, (as the story on the front page about BRAC delays/revisions in yesterdays E/N) IF my section of WHMC remains here due to budget delays, I will enjoy the time left and stay on beyond being able to retire...love my job!

About an hour sounds about right. If you leave by 6:45, you might not get so much traffic.

I did the 8:00-4:00 thing from Westcreek to Ft. Sam almost two years ago and it was awful traffic then. Luckily it was only for two weeks. I couldn't imagine doing that drive every day and I'm sure it's at least twice as bad now..
I'd definitely go with an earlier shift if it's available. Even if it's not available, I would still just go in early to avoid all the traffic. Sometimes leaving 15 minutes earlier can take 30 minutes or more out of the drive. It will also cut down on the amount of gas you waste waiting and chronically stopping and going.

Yep, at least an hour. And if there's an accident like there was this morning...add about another 20 minutes. Ugh.
I drive from Potranco/151 to Fort Sam everyday. Have to be at work at 7:30. I leave here at 6:45 and make it in the door at 7:25...I leave at 4:30 and am getting here at about 5:10.
My co-worker works 8-5...she leaves her house by 7 to make it in at 8. And she lives just off of Richland Hills and 151.

Traffic: Alamo Ranch to Ft Sam Houston
Some of these answers aren't even talking about the same route that you asked. It can be done in just over 30 minutes if you're traveling in at 5am. With the hours that you mentioned, the route will be tolerable in the summer but once school picks up, it'll take an extra 20 minutes. I drive this route every day and if start from the alamo ranch area at 6:15, you can arrive by 7am. If you leave at 7, you'll be lucky to make it by 8am.
On the ride home, if you depart Ft Sam before 4pm, you'll have minimal problems but if you leave FT Sam around 5, it'll again take an hour at least.
The BIGGEST headache that you'll find out is that for some crazy reason, the city has never hooked up HWY 151 to Alamo Ranch Parkway (yet?). So even though on map it looks easy, you cannot drive from Alamo ranch onto Hwy 151. To get INTO Alamo Ranch, you have to go towards Hwy 471 and use the turnaround and at 5:30pm, it will take about 15 minutes to get thru the traffic jam. When departing Alamo Ranch, you HAVE to go southbound on 1604 which is GREAT if you work at Lackland. Cannot wait until they combine this intersection but it looks like it'll be years from now. I would seriously consider living in Alamo Ranch until the developers push the city to fix this traffic flaw.

FYI johnsonkk, we are talking about the same basic route which is IVO 1604 to Ft. Sam, probably via 151/90/35.. I believe nearly everyone in this thread lives within about 5 miles of eachother..

johnsonkk...you pretty much said the same exact thing the rest of us are saying so not sure where you're getting that others aren't even talking the same route?
rd2007 is right...if you want to go 151 to 90 to 35 (or 37) you would pass right by me. I get on 151 at Potranco and it takes me a good 35-40 minutes leaving at 6:45 in the morning. But like I said, if you leave any later the traffic is worse. There have been times that I left at about 6:55 and didn't make it to work until nearly 7:45...timing is everything.
