Default San Antonio Metro

It seems often cities in the San Antonio metro aren't always thought of as being "in" the San Antonio metro. The following cities (at least 5,000 people) are all listed under the San Antonio metro:

San Antonio (duh), New Braunfels, Canyon Lake, Schertz, Seguin, Cibolo, Converse, Live Oak, Universal City, Alamo Heights, Boerne, Bulverde, Fair Oaks Ranch, Floresville, Helotes, Hondo, Kirby, Lakehills, Leon Valley, North Cliff, Pleasanton, Redwood, Terrel Hills, Timberwood Park, and Windcrest.

Of course there are numerous others with populations under 5,000. Why is it that residents from Houston metros are considered to be FROM HOUSTON, while it is usually unheard of for San Antonio metro residents (outside the city) to be FROM SAN ANTONIO?

Probably because Houston is bigger than San Antonio. But, with the way development is stretching out, Boerne and New Braunfels might very soon be considered "San Antonio" as well. We've already practically swallowed up Schertz and Bulverde.

I hope not! SA Metro seems to only encompass Bexar County which forms a natural breaking point. Also, New Braunfels and Boerne are their own areas and have some form of break between their city limits and SA's. I wouldn't consider Castroville or Seguin part of SA either. I also never really considered residents of Katy to be from Houston for the same reason. Of course, give it time. In another half dozen years, I'd bet I-35 is continuous city from Devine to Temple.

SA metro is 8 counties not 1. I believe you're thinking of the term "suburb" in reference to New Braunfels and Boerne because both are definitely in the SA metro area.. Some say they are suburbs some say they're not. I can agree with both sides of thinking and would probably refer to both as satellite cities/towns.
