Needed: 3 top Mex. food restaurants near the Riverwalk (San Antonio, Alamo: hotel, live)

Going to SA soon. LOVE Mexican food - can't wait. Need top 3 recs.- not gourmet just good food prepared like someone cares about what they do - excellent Margaritas a must.

You've created a scenario which is tough to fulfill. As this thread explains in more detail, nearly all of the really good Mexican restaurants in town are farther than walking distance away from the Riverwalk.

It's kind of like asking which restaurants at a mall food court have Zagat ratings.

It's a bit of a walk, but Cascabel on S. St Mary's has the best Mexican (as opposed to Tex Mex) I've found in SA. However it's BYOB, so no magaritas.

Rosario's on S. St Mary's/S. Alamo and Azuca on S. Alamo both have good margaritas, but you'll have to walk 1/2 mile or so from the Riverwalk.

I've lived in many regions of the U.S.A., as well as several countries abroad, and I must say that Rosario's in San Antonio is the best Mexican food I've had anywhere, ever, including Mexico. I think it's because it IS a bit gourmet and they pay tremendous attention to the details.

Azuca's a great choice, but OP should be aware that it's not a Mexican restaurant. It features the cuisine of "Caribbean, Central and Latin America," according to the web site.

Rosario's in SouthTown and Acenar on the Riverwalk top my list. They are owned and operated by the same lady, so there are some similarities between their menus. The margaritas are great...my favorite is the Kahlua Colada.

Um, if you've liced in Mexico you'd know that Rosario's isn't Mexican food - it's Tex-Mex. Very different.

To answer your question, there really isn't a "top 3" mexican restaurants near the riverwalk. There isn't even a top 1.
Acenar which is technically on the riverwalk in the Hotel Valencia (but not in the southbank area), is probably the correct answer. It is owned by Lisa Wong, who owns Rosarios...so they basically have the same menu.

That's because the Mexican restaurants ON the Riverwalk are all pretty lousy, with the exception of Acenar. I haven't been to Rosario's in a long time, but the menu used to be different from Acenar. Acenar is actually a joint venture between the owner of Rosario's and Biga on the Banks, and the menu reflects that. It used to be a great bargain, but the menu has increased in price in the past year. Still good, and a great option for Riverwalk dining - I like the location much better than the main part, as it's quieter, and as the patio is raised somewhat, you're not on display so much.

I second Cascabel. Great interior mexican. Good prices and very friendly.
