I'm sad to hear the negative comments on the massage schools. We went to the massage school near where we used to live and it was wonderful - I have had massages at a variety of spas (mid- to high-end) and the quality of the massages at the school were very comparable (instructors did check in once or twice during the massage to observe the student and also ask me how it was going, if there were any problems, etc.). The main difference was that the massages were done in "semi-private rooms" - a big room divided into about 8 sections, each completely curtained off, but each still with music, massage table with lots of fluffly sheets and blankets to cover the parts not being massaged, etc.
I had been thinking about trying one of the massage schools here, but now I am thinking that might not be the best choice. I have not had a massage since we have moved back down here, so I'll have to consider some of the other suggestions mentioned here.

Watermark Hotel and Spa (broken link) downtown on the riverwalk, and Windlflower Spa at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Spa. Both great spas. Can be pricey, but well worth it!

If I may add another thing, I'd say that if the problem is due to any kind of injury, be sure to explain the issue in detail to the massage therapist before laying down on the table. My wife agrees with me on this--some injuries are better left alone until a certain amount of healing has taken place. For example, it's not a good idea to get a massage after "tweaking your back." The inflammation of the muscles is sometimes made worse during a massage, and the pain may become even more intense.
Also, if the "aches and pains" are due to a medical condition, be sure to talk with your physician prior to making an appointment.

Funny thing is that I'll get about one massage a month, but I don't want to treat it like a monthly bill...

Do Not Go To A Massage School For A Deep Tissue Massage!!! This is a serious massage that can really damage your muscles if not done right. And can be extremely painful. Massage schools are ok if you want a relaxing light swedish massage. Good luck in finding the right one.

I agree with dimwit. I am a massage therapist also but my table is up in NM as we're getting ready to move.
The massage therapist I've been going to is up in Fredericksburg but now that I'm here temporarily, I'd like to find a good one too. Most of them are too cooky cutter, routine. I'd stay away from the massage schools and the spas. Go to the ones in independent offices or ones that come to you. They'll give you more attention. Massage schools and spas are on a timetable and most of the time give you 50 instead of 60 minutes and they'll be in a hurry.
Before going to an MT, tell him/her specifically what you want and don't want.
Let them know about the pressure whether you want it fluff and buff or firm.
Deep tissue does not necessarily mean a lot of pressure like most folks think.

Would strongly urge to stay away from massage schools--they are simply not qualified enough to give a proper deep tissue massage (in my opinion). I've been to several for the cheap massage (wife too tired after running around w/ kids) and have yet to find a good massage. It's great if all you want is a light, relaxing touch. However, if you've got real pains I'd suggest an experienced professional.
Just my 2 cents...

best place for a deep massage is Oak Haven Massage on Huebner. ask for a neuromuscluar massage. Ask for Cannie if available - he gets booked 2-3 weeks in advance. well worth the $59. best part is no memberships.
