I'll be at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center for two or three nights and am looking for some restaurant recommendations that I can get to easily without a car. Please no Tex-Mex, while I'd love to try it I can't eat spicy foods at all for health reasons - not even mild.

I liked eating at Candy's and Athens Greek Express on S. Flores. I don't know if that will be within walking distance for you. I think there is also a deli on S. Flores. There is a New York Style pizza place near the courthouse that seems to be popular. I wasn't too impressed with it.

Bohanans, Biga, Starfish, Monterey, Citrus, Boudros, etc. How far are you willing to walk or cab it?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Little Rhine Steakhouse. If you like a top shelf, top quality steak, that's the place. Across the street from you to the west. Ask anybody that looks like a Texan, they'll know.

Schilo's Delicatessen. 424 E. Commerce. Try a Rueben Sandwich with split pea soup.

You can walk to just about any restaurant in downtown and Southtown from there. You can walk (albeit a longer walk) to the Pearl for even more.

In addition to those already mentioned, La Frite, The Monterey, Bliss.

Thanks for the replies, of the ones mentioned I think Saveur 209 (didn't find 205 so guess this is what you meant), Esquire Tavern, and Bliss look the best. Esquire might be the winner because I also like stout beers or maybe do Saveur or Bliss then stop at Esquire for a beer before heading back to my hotel.

And just to poke fun at Trapper, since all Texans know it, it's Little Rhein :P It does look good too but I'm not a huge steak eater.

Oooh I somehow skipped TXEX06's post. Biga on the Banks and The Monterey both look very good. Monterey seems very reasonably priced too for how good it looks. Would be a decent walk; though a mile is certainly something I can do.

Monterey and Bliss will be about the same distance. They're basically either ends of a large parking lot + a street (when you get here you'll see what I mean).

Monterey's prices are deceptive. The dishes are small and meant to be shared family style, so rarely would you take just one. Somehow I can never leave there without spending a small fortune....
