I have a new baby and want to move south to be closer to family. I have spent over 6 years as an engineer at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics and need to find something to put my skill sets towards in the San Antonio area. All I am coming up with in searches is construction jobs, which I don't think i would qualify for or really have much background in.

Are there any really solid places for engineers (mechanical or aerospace) to work down there?

I applied last week at Southwest Research Institute which has a really good opening for me, but I don't know how long it could take to hear back.

As far as aeronautical engineering, you might check out some of the companies at Port San Antonio (the former Kelly Air Force Base). There are also a few aircraft companies at San Antonio International Airport that may employ engineers.

I'd say mechanical engineering is a tough one in San Antonio. Not many employers here in that kind of business. KCI (medical equipment) is one of the few that comes to mind. Southwest Research is also a good choice, but it can be tough to get in there without an employee referral.

You are correct that the vast majority of engineering-related jobs in San Antonio would be in the civil & construction field.

Thanks for the feedback so far.. SwRI is where I really want to land a spot, not much else is coming up though. The USAJobs.gov site has a bunch of positions, so I am grinding through them applying to as many as I qualify for.

I'm in a similar position, except I am trying to find something in electrical or computer engineering. You may be able to find some jobs on USAJobs. Most that I have seen in your field are looking for engineers to manage facilities construction projects. Many require a PE.
