1604 is a Freeway that loops around San Antonio. Not sure why anyone would say stay away from it other than the insane amount of traffic that travel on it on the far north side.

As for your safe question. Well, you'll have to be make specific on which areas you're talking about, as San Antonio is a vast area and there are tons of safe areas and neighborhoods.

San Antonio is a very spread out city, so you will find safe and unsafe areas all around. The best thing to do is narrow it down based on distance from work/school and what type of neighborhood you're looking for (urban/downtown, suburbs, etc.). I would definitely suggest driving around and getting a vibe for the areas you may be interested in.

I've lived several places off of 1604, and unless you're on the far NW side, I haven't found the traffic to be worse than 281 and I35.

If it helps, I am from a small sheltered little town, and found the move to San Antonio surprisingly easy in terms of finding safe and affordable living.

As feefiifoe said - the more information you provide on what you are looking for, the more we can help you.

As far as the warning to stay away from 1604 - I can only guess that is because of traffic or an aversion to suburbia. Both are valid to certain degrees. 1604 is well developed from the northeast side to the far west, more industrial on the east and down right country on the south and southwest sides.

The traffic can be bad on 1604 but not as bad as some would leave you to believe. My wife worked near 1604 & 281N and her commute to/from 1604 & Potranco (far west side) took about an hour at the peak commute times. Obviously is you are not used to this that is horrible - but it is better than is found in many of the coastal cities.

As far as it being suburbia - it definitely is that. So if that is not your cup of tea I would look inside the 410.

.
That sounds horrible. My father can get from 10/De Zavala to San Marcos in rush hour traffic in that amount of time. ON 1604 nonetheless.
