Kudos to your friend for trying to be original - I'd just steal someone else's logo and modify it to fit our needs. Of course, I have no artistic abilities at all!

but is that design copyrighted? I'm betting so.....
gotta be really careful with that....

I agree with everyone else. The design is non-descript and SURELY does not appear to be an E or a T...

Although I pointed out that Silver Creek's rendition looks to be and probably is, copyrighted, I DO love the idea of color being added, but DO leave the print in grey and white....

GOOD LUCK!! Hope he wins.......

I like it. Very elegant, simple, clean, upscale, suitable for its purpose. I can see the E&T but would not see it without the words below to clue me in which is ok since the words are part of the logo. I think it is very classy... very NYC. The more I look at it the more obvious the E&T and the more I like it. I know a little about design.

I can see the E and the T, but, honestly, the first thought that came to my mind was a graffiti "tag".

Maybe if the E & T were not having sex... lol. Maybe if they were not touching and less abstract... I like the typestyle because it looks Victorian or King Williamish. I think a dark plum color background would look better than gray. JM2cents.

I see The Reaper on the right, and he has just punched the daylights out of his latest victim. But I am an avid player of the "what does the cloud look like?" game, so maybe it's just me.

I'm with the others. While the design is pretty, it fails to convey what the area is about. If I didn't know anything, just fancy scroll-work and "East Town" wouldn't tell me much.

As for the wording, tell him to adjust the kerning (space between letters) a bit. Remove a bit of the space (squish it a little). The result should be a little more sophistication.

Perhaps something more on the simple side would work for the ET part of the logo. Maybe a really "blocky" font or a little less scroll-work (straighten the scroll out some).

Just my 2 cents...

I think we have to be careful of over branding a neighborhood. Isn't it already the St.Paul Square/Sunset Station/Dignowity Hill area? You could make the same note about Southtown just being the same as South Alamo/King William/Lavaca, but it seemed that from the beginning Southtown was more of summary of existing character, while East Town and this floral logo seems to be coming from scratch.

Either way, I recommend that the designer, and the client, really get into the heart of what makes the area special, and gives cues to that.

St. Paul Square is a small collection of buildings off Commerce St. Sunset Station is the Amtrak station and Dignowity Hill is a neighborhood that does actually encompass the EastTown District. As for Southtown, King William and Lavaca are bith included in the Southtown district.

I think the "E" leans too much to be immediately recognizable. I like the fleur-de-lis "T."
