yes and no...
The "bend" of the river is natural - where most of the restaurants are. The "extension" that passes the Convention Center toward the mall are man made. The part that straightens out the river and is the newest to get sidewalks, is man made for flood control. Check this link out: http://www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com/RiverwalkHistory/index.asp (broken link)

Take one of the boat tours - if you're lucky you'll get a good tour guide!

Having a good tour guide makes all the difference. My fav is Ruben, who's funny, keeps you engaged, and gives you a lot more information than some of the other guides I've tried.

One guide was so mono-tone and boring that I wanted to just jump out of the boat.

The area drained is controled and seperated from the "natural" river by 2 damns. They close the gates and drain out the water. The damns are located where the main channel goes under Market Street. The damns ar about 1 block apat. If you take the barge trip the tour guide will point them out.

I don't imagine a tour boat captain would have been laughing if his/her boat had "found" that shopping cart on the bottom of the river.

Usual stuff they find are cameras, chairs from the restaurants, eating utensils. It's unusual to find anything big like a shopping cart, but who knows...it's only 6 or 7 feet deep at the most.
