I may be relocating to San Antonio and working at the 1604/281 interchange.

First priority is good schools for my 9 year old.
Second priority is safe area. Preferably a master planned community/or community with pool.
Third priority - commute no more than 30 minutes (if that is doable)

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have been looking at Alamo Ranch and like what I have learned about it, but not sure what that commute would be like.

I am looking to purchase a house for no more than$225k.

Thx in advance for your feedback!

There are plenty of neighborhoods in the stone oak or cibolo canyon area that will work. Alamo ranch is way too far and the traffic will be a nightmare going to and from work .

Stone Oak is what Alamo Ranch will be in 20 years. I would look there. It is also right near 281/1604. The schools are also better.

Great. Thank you both! I have read some things about Stone Oak having awful traffic, but maybe where I am working is better than where others on these boards are commuting to (?) Do you happen to know what the average commute time might be from Stone Oak to 1604/281?

Stone Oak is essentially located *just* NW of the 281/1604 interchange (which, is STILL not an interchange, but that's another topic).

Comments about "Stone Oak traffic" are usually in regards to the section of 281 north of 1604. Many of those people do not live in Stone Oak, but live in Encino Park or Cibolo Canyons (east of 281), or in the towns just north of San Antonio located along 281. Stone Oak proper runs from just north of 1604, bounded by Blanco Rd to the west, 281 to the east, and the northern border is Evans Rd/Canyon Golf Rd. However, many refer to entire area north of 1604 (both east and west of 281) as "Stone Oak".

Anyway, you'll want to look in zip codes 78258 (essentially the Reagan HS attendance area), or, if you want to be on the east side of 281, zip codes 78259/61, essentially the Johnson HS attendance area. Both are located in the NEISD school district, and the entire area is considered safe. Stone Oak is a master planned community, as are Encino Park and Cibolo Canyons.

This is so helpful. Thank you! I am researching Stone Oak now and it looks wonderful! Schools look great, etc. I am guessing there is not a community pool, from what I can tell, but there is a Lifetime Fitness near by.

Most of the neighborhoods within Stone Oak have their own pools. It is an area with over 25 individual neighborhoods, some gated, some not.

Here is a link to the Stone Oak POA:

There is a pool a lot of people in neighborhoods without a pool join on Knights Cross. It's nice and very reasonable, or it was a few years back when we considered joining. I think it's Socoma-I've been several times I just can't recall for sure. The 3 Arrowhead neighborhoods off Stone Oak Pkwy do not have a pool. Stone Mountain does as does Los Lomas, the Remington neighborhoods off Wilderness Oaks and most of the gated neighborhoods have pools. I know there are some other neighborhoods near Las Lomas that don't have their own pool but are minutes to the pool on Knights Cross.

The area schools for your child are Stone Oak, Hardy Oak, Las Lomas, Wilderness Oak, Canyon Springs and Vinyard Ranch. They are great schools. As stated SO pretty much is 1604/281 so driving from any other area would be increasing your commute. Driving to Alamo Ranch would be a nightmare and the prices are not going to be lower than SO especially considering SO has some slightly older options (about 30 yrs is probably about oldest) and a lot of neighborhoods to chose from.

Great info. Thank you all again. I noticed there is a whole foods, trader joes and a lot of other shopping near by, which is definitely something I am looking for also. ddeel - thx for info on Knights Cross. Some of the homes in my price range are definitely not in a community with pool, so that is exactly what I am looking for. I mapped the address of one house to the address of where I would be working and it is less than 5 miles! I am no longer looking in Alamo Ranch.
