I am currently living in Long Island, NY and considering relocating to San Antonio, TX. I have an aunt who relocated to Dallas, TX and made it out very well for herself and her son. Recently, I know a couple who made the move to San Antonio, TX with their two children and seem to be doing great.

My husband is a veteran and we have two young children. I am considering San Antonio, TX because I have been told that it is very family oriented, the quality of life is better, the economy is better, and it has a highly populated Christian environment. I was told that the job market was better (still looking into that), and that ultimately it would be a better place for our family (we are a young multi-racial family). Can anyone please share their opinions and/or related experiences? This is a huge decision for us and although I plan to visit very soon, I was hoping to get some feedback first. Thank you.

Depends on what jobs you are looking for. San Antonio is very heavy on military and medical employment. Gas and oil too but with the barrel prices going down, maybe not good for this year in terms of gas and oil jobs. Keep in mind visiting is different from living here. A lot of visitors think this is a great place, then when they do come and live here for a few years then some realize this is not the right place.

There are plenty of other types of jobs in San Antonio as well. IT job sector is growing...and we have plenty of call center jobs.

You might want to look into the weather, it is quite a bit different in San Antonio than it is in Long Island. The payscale is going to probably be a lot lower in San Antonio than what you're used to but the cost of living will be so much lower, those two should balance out.

For everything you posted about your family's situation, San Antonio sounds like it would be a good fit.

OP, have you actually visited the city? There's a lot to be said for the "vibe" you get when you come to a place for the first time.

I grew up on Long Island and moved to Texas in 1981, living first in Austin and then San Antonio. Been here since 1987.

Its a much different (but in my opinion better) lifestyle but it takes some getting used to. Its not as fast paced and the people here are generally friendlier to strangers and people they just met than NYers are. While we get most of the travelling Broadway shows, music acts and other cultural events, it isn't like NY where you have dozens of choices on any given day. There really isn't any change of seasons here. The joke I heard when I first came down here are there are really only 2 seasons in San Antonio, Hot and Damn Hot. Salaries are generally lower but so is the cost of living and housing prices. Politically, San Antonio is a somewhat liberal city in the reddest state in the country.

OP: My neighbor's sister moved from Long Island to Houston and even that was a culture shock to her so I don't have any doubt San Antonio will be as well.

We have several CD posters that lived here (or still live here) that will go on and on about how much they disliked living here and that is fine. San Antonio isn't for everyone. Austin isn't for everyone. Dallas...Houston...you get the idea.

The population here is highly Christian, but not so much "in your face" Christian. If you are not Christian yourself, most people will not bother you about it.

I see a lot of multi-racial families here also, so I doubt that will be an issue for you as well.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate your response. Did you have a family when you moved out? How did you manage with the relocation? And how different is Austin then San antonio?
