My husband has a business trip to San Antonio soon. The kids (4 kids age 5 and under) and I are coming along. I have two days to kill while he's in conferences & am interested driving us all to the North Star Mall for shopping and playtime. Our hotel is in the middle of downtown and I have a little bit of a phobia of driving on big-city interstates. So my question is this: without getting on or too close to any of the crazy interstates, what is a SAFE city road for me to take north? I was looking at San Pedro. Does that go through any bad areas?? I am just horrible with directions and the last thing I need is to get lost in a bad area with four little kids in the car with me.

Stated more simply: what is the safest way to get from the middle of downtown to North Star Mall WITHOUT getting on any highways?

Also, is there anything kid-friendly to do right in downtown (riverwalk not an option - too many tiny kids for me to keep track of by all that water!)

San Pedro is fine. It's commercial the entire length of the road. You'll just have to sit through a lot of traffic lights to go between downtown and the north side.

If you want to go by some large, old-money homes during the trip, take McCullough Ave. It's even slower, with less traffic.

The part of downtown I'm guessing you won't like is within a mile of Haven for Hope. That's where the homeless people congregate. Look for "Haven for Hope" on a map.

San Pedro is a perfectly fine route to get to North Star. It will take about 15 minutes to get there in non-rush hour traffic. Rush hour gets a bit busy, especially near HIldebrand and the closer you get to 410, but not so bad I would avoid it.

Thanks, Bo! Glad to know San Pedro is fine - I'll probably take that route north. Our hotel is just on the otherside of the highway from Haven for Hope, so I guess the kids and I won't go walking around outside the hotel - great to know!! Thanks again.

Ashbeeigh, I have no problem going slowly or dealing with traffic lights... just so long as I don't have to deal with the interstate (aka, trying to read signs, make lane changes, and pacify screaming kids all while driving 70mph. Not my thing!)

Is there a nice 2-way road that runs through downtown, or is everything pretty much one-way?

There is a children's museum on Houston Street. Perfect for children your age.

A short drive north from downtown is the San Antonio Zoo. Probably a good place to spend a day. There is an adjoining park where you can take a little kids' train ride.

That's closed now. It's reopening on Broadway in June.

The DoSeum (The-Doo-See-Um) will be San Antonio’s only museum just for children where kids learn by doing, creating and tinkering—instead of just looking and listening. Grand Opening weekend is June 6 & 7.
