I am confused on how this new Texas law works requiring only one sticker for inspection and license plate sticker registration. If I have an inspection sticker due now do I still have to go in for an inspection or do I wait until my vehicle registration sticker is due? If my vehicle is newer that 1995 do I still have to go to the required inspection stations to have an emissions test done? I know the fee is now $7.50 for an inspection but is that included with the vehicle registration fee?

It's really goofy.

You get the inspection now, and they give you a receipt. Keep the receipt with the vehicle, and when your registration is due, present it with your insurance and drivers license. You'll get one sticker that looks identical to years past (with the same diagram of placing it over the inspection sticker). Honestly, I'm surprised they didn't change the design or color, because I would think it would cause confusion... especially since the program didn't start in January but in March.

You can also renew online when the registration time comes. I tried this for the first time last week.
It's really easy and quick. Your insurance and inspection status are verified electronically through the DPS database. I received an approval email the next day and am expecting my new registration in the mail.
Both my inspection and registration are due in May. I had the inspection performed a few hours before I registered online.

How much did y'all pay at the inspection place you went to? I went to one of the "Official Inspection Stations" and it cost me around $17.50 which is more than I ever paid before.

I am very happy about this. I don't need to take my car for my inspection hookup anymore. Now i can just call it in.

$7.00. Which is less than half what I'd paid last year ($14.50 IIRC) But, looking at the DPS fee chart, $7.50 would be correct. I suppose I was billed incorrectly?

No, you can't call in a state inspection. You'll still need to take your vehicle to a state inspection station for the VIR (Vehicle Inspection Report) "hookup" or legally, there is no calling in an inspection. Never has been, never will be.

Yeah, I got taken. I thought they were going to charge me $7.00 but the guy told me upfront there were two other charges added on. I questioned him about that and he said it was going to be the same wherever I went and I believed him. Doh.

So a warning to others, don't go to "Official Inspection Station" to get your inspections.

I have noticed no one has mentioned this: they allow you to get the inspection up to 3 months prior to the registration expiry/renewal. So if registration expires in June, you can do your inspection in April. That's what I heard, but I imagine it's best to do it just the month before or the month of.

I suppose that if your inspection is already expired but the registration is still valid, just peel the sticker off & clean the adhesive off with Goof-Off & just get an inspection just prior to registration. Hopefully that would be the simplest solution.

I think if you let your inspection expire you run the risk of getting a ticket because the police can now run your plates and see if your car is inspected.

If your inspection is due and your tags are months down the road, you need to get the inspection and remove the old one in the window. You then need to carry around the receipt for your inspection in case you are caught. The sync up time is March 2016. At that point you will have to be getting your inspection to get your tags. There is some details on this around the web,
