Alternatively, you can head 2 or 3 exits downtown and stay at any number of chain hotels like Days Inn, La Quinta, etc., for between $89 and $169/nt depending on how full the city is. Lastly, San Antonio has a plethora of beautiful bed and breakfasts that can be really good deals, especially when you factor in the breakfast and extra perks/happy hour many offer. Plus, who really likes those chain hotels anyway? Visit Bed and Breakfast San Antonio Texas TX Lodging and Accommodation Links to Bed & Breakfast Association Member Inns or San Antonio Bed and Breakfasts to see a sampling of B&B's and rates. If this is a route you are interested in, DM me and I can give you my personal favorites among the bunches.

Just FYI: I would not recommend any of the low-budget motels on I-35 or Austin Highway. In San Antonio, you typically get what you pay for hotel-wise, and remember, this is a big convention town so if you're looking for cheap rates try to time your visit so you come in between big conferences.
Why would he go up 281 to Jones Maltsburger to find a hotel if he's looking at St. Mary's? St Mary's is off of Culebra. The closest highways are either loop 410 if you go west or I10 if you go east. I10 is at least 20 minutes away with all the lights. I think you may be thinking of the Incarnate Word/Trinity area, thats off of Hildabrand, off of 281.

Crystal Blue.

The nearest hotels/motels (La Quinta, Marriot Residence Inn) would be closer to Loop 410, there are hotels up and down the loop between highway 151 and Bandera road. There are some in the Alamo Downs business park, right before Ingram road. This are is about a 10 minute drive or less down culebra road from St. Mary's, heading west.

Is he looking for a place close to St. Mary's University or St. Mary's Street? I'm confused. I thought he was looking for a place off of St. Mary's Street.

Ok, that's an entirely different story. You shouldn't have any trouble finding an affordable chain hotel near St. Mary's University. I thought you were trying to find something near St. Mary's Street, which is an entertainment/bar/restaurant strip closer to UIW and Trinity University. For something close to St. Mary's University, you can't go wrong with the Red Roofs, La Quinta's and the like that are all scattered around the far northwest/west curve of Loop 410. Still, it will be Easter, which fills up the city with visitors from Mexico, so you may find that the motels near SeaWorld are all filled or have high rates. Hotels.com is your friend. Good luck...

The Mexican visitors usually come during the week before Easter. For some odd reason, Holy Week is seen as a shopping week extravaganza.
