SA is a hybrid of both. It's a older historic city inside 410 while its new from 410 to 1604 and newer from 1604 and out.

If the books are to be believed, it's the oldest city in the US - note not the oldest US city, as SA was a city before the US claimed Texas.

The part that makes it a 'city' (vs suburbia) is indeed older: there are many historic districts near downtown, quite a lot of interesting architecture in the downtown buildings (despite many complaints about the lack of skyscrapers - give me the Tower Life Building anyday). However the vibe is "newer" - very young, very active, very lively. There's a strong Arts element, lots of live music and cultural events dominated by young 20/30 somethings. If you stick to the suburbia part, which is where most of the new development is, you may very well miss all that. However there is quite a lot of development around the center of town, revitalization as well as new stuff.

I just left the HEB on Babcock/Huebner and the seafood was very smelly. I mean, it was nasty. I wouldn't recommend buying any there.

I think there has been a thread or two about the lack of fresh seafood stores here. We're not seafood aficionados, really, so Sea Island and Red Lobster are fine by us, as far as restaurants go. When in Corpus, we do Water Street--never been to the one here, though.

Not as good as Santa Barbara, but we rarely have trouble finding good seafood at Central Market and our local HEB has quite good (but not a huge selection) seafood.

We're foodies, and often eat seafood at restaurants and have never been disappointed, but we don't do chain places (no Sea Island, for example).
