Pancho-Villa has great advice -- look through other threads, as moving questions are asked all the time.

Personally, I do not like Windcrest. Ick. I'd seriously look in the 78209 area and be done with it.

After reading through some threads come back to yours and asks specifics. Right now you have the whole wide city at your fingertips.

Def Rackspace (that's all we would move for). 30-45 min drive to work is fine. Closer is better if the area is good. Not close to retirement.
Except for Alamo Heights, which is probably out of your price range (possible, with some effort and searching and luck), most of the suburban communities you mention are Anywhere, USA, so house-wise, you'll be fine.

Lots of MI transplants here (I used to leave just across the border in IN, so I know the area reasonably well). It's hotter here, dry, fewer trees, browner, dirtier. There's also no snow, it feels like a small town wherever you go (which is good and bad), friendlier, and because I live downtown near the river I have very easy access to nature/hike/bike trails and community events. That's more challenging in the 'burbs, depends a lot on where you are (there are some great trails in the NE of the city)

Will you like it? Some do, some don't. It's different, and if you've never lived outside MI will be a huge change. If you're up for change, you'll find the great things about SA and deal with the bad. If not, you'll hate it.

I looked on realtor.com and some of Alamo Heights fall within the budget however they are very small for the price so I rather purchase elsewhere.

What is the safest area? Where does everyone tend to move too? What area doesn't have the worst traffic?

Search for them in the forum. I know I have spoken, in depth, about Shavano Park in the more recent past.

These are both great communities and similar in many ways. If the goal is to be closer to Rackspace, then Hollywood Park would check that box between these two neighborhoods. HP has quite a few young families (it's an older established neighborhood that continues to get younger) and the community hosts family-friendly events throughout the year to help promote family and community.

Best of luck with your search!
