Lackland AFB
Hello,
I am a new member and I have been looking through the threads. I will be re-locating to lackland afb in August. Like many others I will like to be in a nice area with good schools. I don't want to live on base. I will never live on base again if I don't have too. Long story..LOL
So I see that the NISD and the NEISD are two good school districts and nice areas but are these two areas far from Lackland AFB? I see that the traffic is pretty bad too and I don't want to have to travel too far. Well thanks for any input that you have.

I live near Seaworld and work on Lackland. Door to desk in the morning is usually around 30 minutes or so.
My kids are in nisd.
IMHO traffic for the most part is all about perspective. My previous assignment was in the D.C. area where the traffic was orders of magnitude worse than here.

It also depends on the hours you work. The earlier you come in the better as far as I'm concerned and ideal is anything before 5:30 AM, or working mids like I am now, 10:00 PM - 6:30 AM. Working 7:00 - 4:00 or something like that will drive you crazy if you're coming from the far west or NW. I've heard that coming in from the E, SE, and NE isn't so bad no matter what time of the morning because most of that traffic is going the other way.

The Seaworld area is really nice and close to Lackland. There's subdivisions off Potranco as well but I'm not sure what school district they are in.

My husband works at Lackland and from our driveway to Lackland it takes him around 15 minutes. The traffic is really not that bad when he leaves and compared to other areas it's not bad where we live at all. We live off of Potranco rd. (sort of sea world area). We are in the NISD, Stevens, Luna, and Ott are our schools.

I'm with the others who say that traffic is a matter of perspective and also timing. I live in The Great Northwest part of town and it take me from 20 minutes to 40 minutes purely depending on the time I leave in the morning. If I leave my neighborhood by 6:45, it is closer to 20 minutes; if I leave at 7:05, it is closer to 40 minutes!
We are in Northside School District.

Another vote for Westcreek here - lots of varying home prices, and lots to choose from. What home price range are you looking for, or are you renting for a while?
I worked on Brooks City-Base and Kelly for a few years, and commuted from Westcreek. There was traffic, but depends on what time of day you leave! 5 min late usually meant and extra 20-30 minutes in traffic!

my significant other works at Lackland and he says it's about 15 minutes from Redbird Ranch (off Potranco) plus he's happy he doesn't have to get on 1604 to get there anymore. I don't know about more heavily travelled times since he's on mids, but he thinks he's avoiding a lot of traffic. They're building an elementary school nearby and supposedly eventually a middle and high school.
