I am just looking for any local opinions on these six zip codes we have found homes to rent in. We are a family of five, with two in college and one in high school (honors). We are relocating because my husband got a job and have been looking for a rental home. The ones I have found so far are in 78223, 78239, 78244, 78251, 78242, and 78247

Are these decent neighborhoods? Family oriented? Good High School? Any info would be great, thank you.

Where is your husband working, and what is your price range?

Alot of those zip codes are going to lead to some absolutely terrible commutes for him. A lot of those areas arnt in the best parts of town either. Not saying they arnt safe, but there are much better places to live. I would search around 78249, good schools, easy access to i10

78223 is on the southeast side. There are some older fixed up homes that are very cute, but for kids and schools I would avoid that area.

78239 is so/so and hit or miss. The schools are so/so as well. Ask about neighborhoods in this zip before you even look at the home.

78244 is going to be slightly better than 78239. It's generally a good area.

78251 is a nicer suburban area. The schools are pretty good. I'm not sure if your kids would go to Marshall, Brandeis or O'Conner there.

78242 I would run away from as quickly as possible.

78247 is a very nice area. I would not have any concerns there.

However, working in 78257 and commuting from the 78239, 78244 or 78223 area would be a rough drive. 78247 would also be sort of rough, although you could take 1604 all the way there. 78251 may be the best option of the above for schools and commute.

No way you're going to find 3/2 for $900 in 78249. Unless it's a complete crap hole.

Correction on the schools for 78251, that would be Stevens, Marshall, maybe Brennan or Taft (I can't remember if they cross 1604) - none of them are bad schools, our girls go to Brennan and we have friends with kids in each of the others.

I agree with Ashbeigh that 78251 would be about your best commuting choice out of the options you gave. The commute won't be fun, expect a lot of traffic buildup (though not standstill) on 1604 between Culebra and north of Bandera at various times of the day - it will get better once the overpasses are completed and the red lights removed for through traffic. There are a couple backroad options to Leon Springs area I've used in the past.
