I know what you mean about Arizona and NM being southwestern. I don't consider SA to be southwestern nor southern. However, that still doesn't answer how CALIFORNIA is "true southwestern." Please explain.
I'm trying to understand how "muddiness" has a positive sense, but, hey, whatever floats your boat.

Have you ever been to eastern Cali or just east of LA. Cause if you do go anywhere east of LA you'll see why Cali could be South-Western. In my opinion west Texas has nothing on eastern Cali. Those beaches only go so far.

I've spent A LOT of time in the deserts of So Cal along the way to AZ. Geographically that region is more akin to AZ than the beaches, culturally it's its own special place ;-). I'd agree that is more SW than the coast, but I have a hard time referring to California or Oregon overall as "Southwest" culturally. Just doesn't fit. Besides, I got the impression from hello's posts that she's not from the deserts of eastern So Cal, if she was, she wouldn't think SA was so bad. (btw - I love love LOVE the deserts of that region)

Um...yeah...had to drive through eastern California to get where I am. Ok, so I can see where that area would be southwestern, but so is west Texas. However, Ms. Hello talks incessantly about L.A. and Oregon, so I just presumed that she was saying these locales were the "true southwest" as compared to San Antonio. Where?

Just to say as a Brit who lived in TX and have visited SA a number of times, I love this thread.
I've worked in and visited other states, but TX is unique for geographical, cultural and historic reasons and I found it infuriating at times, but I love it.

1. It's a Troll, and it's not mine.... I just know US History, and do not agree with the "love" sentiment.
2. Anyone with an understanding of US History should know what the CSA was.
