Is San Antonio considered southern or southwestern?
Trying to classify San Antonio is a difficult task. Geographically, it's in a generally recognized southern US state, Texas. However, because Texas is so large, it's often difficult to quantify. Furthermore, the city's primary ethnic and cultural heritage is Hispanic, and with that come elements of the southwest.
Do you consider San Antonio to be a part of the south or southwest?

We are geographically the second most southern major city in the continental US.
In addition, I have learned quite a bit about southern ideology by living here. I doubt I would have learned those in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado.

Texas,Oklahaom,New Mexico,Arizona are all considered as being part of the Southwestern United States Of America , however sometimes Northern Oklahoma is considered as part of the Mid-Western States Such As Kansas And Missouri. This is a good example Oklahoma City Southwestern Tulsa Oklahoma Either Southwestern Or Mid-Western.

It depends on how you want to look at it....
Texas was part of the Confederacy and if you use that as the yardstick to define "Southern" then it is southern. Though once Grant closed Vicksberg in 1863 and gave the Union complete control of the Mississippi Texas was effectively isolated. We war went on for another two years.
Wikipedia defines Southwestern as sometimes including Texas, and sometimes not....
Southwestern United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For my part I'll just go with Texan.... We are our own region.

I would say neither. Just like Texas, it's in a class of it's own. The only cities that have a real identity would be Houston, that is clearly southern, and El Paso that is clearly southwestern. San Antonio, never had a sizable African-American community, and by all accounts it was amazingly easy to integrate, with no riots, protests ect... That the south suffered with. Although San Antonio was founded by the Spanish, those with the biggest influence in it's development are arguably the German merchant class that founded San Antonio's biggest businesses of the time. Think Pioneer flour, Wolf & Marx department store and Joske's. Later into the even the 1970's it wasn't the Hispanic community that had power. The center of power was in the mansions of Alamo Heights and Olmos Park. Names like Strauss, and Maverick mattered. When the City went to geographical city council districts is when it changed.

I definitely don't see much southern influence in S.A. I see it as more mexican influence. But not far away is the german influence in the hill country.Look at the names and you'll find the german areas.

Almost irrelevant, yet does "King of the hill" strike to the audience as southwestern, or southern?

we southern. nothing west about us. except in el paso. lol. dam laker fans over there. haha. and yes there is a huge mexican influence here. were do most of them come from. mexico right? were is mexico? to the SOUTH. so there is a southern influence. just cuz there a lot of mexicans here in sa or in texas doesnt mean they cant be from the south. i also agree that texas is in a class on its own, but we are still a part of this nation. and we are located in the southern region. weather u say south or south west, south is still in there. we are southern no matter which way u put it.

I would classify Texas generally as a Southwestern state, because MOST of the state has those characteristics. Now smuboy86 is exactly right- Texas is so big and unique and is a class of it's own- and different parts of the state resemble different regions in the U.S.
East Texas (including Houston) is DEFINATELY like the south. North Texas (including Ft. Worth and Dallas) is like the mid-west. Central Texas isn't like anything, except Central Texas. South Texas (San Antonio and south) is just completely out there on it's own, not like Mexico, not like the US, not like anything. And then mostly everything west of I-35 is like the southwest, ESPECIALLY far west Texas and El Paso.
San Antonio, if anything, I think would be classified as Southwest. Most of the nation would think of us (and have for centuries) as Southwest. Theres a monument on my campus comemorating the first KofC "Convention" (for lack of the better word) in San Antonio- described as "The first held in the southwest"

No matter where I live I will always be a G.R.I.T.---girl raised in the South! Cooked a big 'ol soul-food dinner tonight! But it can be confusing! WHen I moved here, I moved West but I notice a lot of 'South Texas' hospitals, clinics, etc. Doesn't really matter to me--I love SA!
