Does anyone remember the name of the grocery store from the 90's that moved into the building on Austin Hwy after Kroger's moved out? (The address is 1246 Austin Hwy - where the Gold's Gym is now)

It was something like Texas Warehouse? It didn't last long.

I remember that Kroger store, like most of the local Kroger locations, became a Handy-Andy for a couple of years, around the early to mid 1990s. After Handy-Andy closed that location, along with a bunch of others, I don't remember another grocery store there, although it's possible there was a very short-lived one.

I don't think it was ever a handy Andy, it was too close to the flagship handy Andy at oak park.

Yes, it was a Handy-Andy for a period of time, after the Kroger name went away in San Antonio. I think Handy-Andy absorbed many of the former Kroger Locations in San Antonio, but it wasn't long before they started shedding those stores.

Now I remember. Megafoods acquired former Kroger stores in San Antonio after Kroger pulled out, and reopened the stores under the name "Texans Warehouse". Shortly after that, Megafoods acquired the Handy-Andy chain, and changed the Texans Warehouse stores to Handy-Andy, a more familiar name in the local market.

At one time, Handy-Andy and HEB were the two dominant grocery chains in San Antonio, with Handy-Andy probably having a slight edge in market share, up until the mid to late 1970s.

I seem to remember a warehouse grocery place owned by Handy Andy around 1980. It was off I35 near Fort Sam. It was kind of like a Sams Club. I don't remember HEB ever having anything like that.

I remember that building being Kroger. I feel old now.

Also I do miss the Handy-Andy stores. The last time I set foot in one was back in 2006 off Pleasanton rd before it changed to Arlan's or something like that.
