LOL. Sorry for the wrong impression...I'm not (much ) of a lush. I've lived in east coast cities and chicago, so I'm used to bars and nightclubs as being the center of a neigborhood near to coffeeshops, bookstores, stores, etc. with a gay or gay friendly bent.
This website is great and thanks to everybody for all your wonderful replies!

I dont know.. I recall that there are a bunch of housing where mostly Gay people live.. which was in the King Williams area.. But it has been a while since I have frequented that area. These houses were mostly apartment style of stuff.

Medical Center, King Williams, Monte Vista is where most gays live or I should say where a high concentration of gays live.

Tobin Hill. Look up centroproperties.net for urban listings.

Hi, yigoguy, and welcome to SA!
I've been looking to buy a home lately, and I've been going through some of the neighborhoods on the near north side: Beacon Hill, Alta Vista, Tobin Hill, and Monte Vista (where I now rent, and which is too pricey to buy in for someone of limited means--such as myself!). All of these areas appear to be very gay-friendly. I looked at a great house yesterday in a very residential part of Alta Vista and spent a lot of time chatting to the lesbian couple next door, and they pointed out all of the same-sex households up and down the block. I'm not gay myself, but it's important for me to live somewhere where all kinds of folk are welcome and comfortable.
Check listings in the 78212 and 78201 zip codes in those four neighborhoods, as well as the neighborhoods in the south side that people mentioned (Lavaca, King William, "South Town," etc., which I think are mainly 78210 or 78204).
Overall, this seems to be a very tolerant place with a lot of openly gay people. Most of the explicitly "gay" businesses are on the near north side. They're "tame" by SF, NYC, or Chicago standards, but good to have nonetheless. In general, I think that much of the city is a friendly place. I remember reading that San Antonio has more same-sex households with children than any other city in the country, at least as a percentage of the population. Good statistic!

I don't think San Antonio is a smart place for gays. While it's not dangerous in regards to gay bashing, it's also not particularly progressive, and in the state of Texas atleast there are much better alternatives, namely Austin, Dallas, and Houston.

Well, hopefully with more one more gay person moving here, it'll be that much more friendlier.
I'm moving for a job here, so while I considered commuting from Austin, it seemed like such a long drive.
I'm going to be staying at a extended stay place before I choose an apartment, so all these postings are great. At least I'll be able to narrow down some of the neighborhoods to visit.

Aside from petty reasons, you'll slam the city of San Antonio for made up reasons, won't you? How can you say SA isn't a smart place for gays and isn't progressive? If I remember, there was a lesbian on the last city council, she was voted into that position by her district constituents. Not only that, the current Chief of Police was the Grand Marshall for last years Gay Pride parade. Aside from the aforementioned fact that SA is home to the largest percentage of same-sex households with children and the numerous online websites for gay people living in San Antonio, your conclusion is both head scratching and humorous.. I'm sorry if I come off as hostile, it's just that I have a family member who is gay. He lived in Las Vegas for the past 15 years and when he returned last October he was amazed at how liberal San Antonio was from when he last lived here and said (and I quote) "this place sure beats the sh-t out of Vegas."
Also, funny enough, sometime last year some local ultra conservative radio host here got pissed at HEB for supporting a gay group so he decided he'd use his show to recruit people to protest at one of the HEB's, he plug it hard and though he'd have a sizable turnout. When he held his protest, only 7 people showed up and they had an overwhelming supply of signs that they thought would be used. He found out, SA isn't a gay bashing city.

Welcome to SA... I think you'll find most people here very enlightened. San Antonio is a friendly town. I wish you the best of luck in your housing search.
