According to the Current, The Granary has a buttermilk chess pie. Looking at their menu, it's $6/slice. Usually the difference between the buttermilk pie and a chess pie is that a chess pie has cornmeal in it.

Buttermilk pie isn't hard to make and it's not expensive to make, either. It's not any more complicated than making a pumpkin pie.

Lubys used to have chess pie and it was great. I'd also check Mad Hatters or Twin Sisters

Don't know how much you are willing to spend or drive but The Tootie Pie Company in Boerne is supposed to have amazing pies... I've never tried them but I have heard good things...

I think I used to get buttermilk pie at the Tip-Top, and also at Earl Abel's. Haven't been to the new location, though.
