Dear Parents,

We are young couple in 30s with a 6 yr old son and currently live in NY westchester county. My son has ASD (I would say high functioning) and he is mainstreamed and currently receives special instruction 2 hrs/day, speech (pull out) 2/week, and PT 2 times a week. We are happy with his services but not happy with everything else. I have 1 hr drive to work because (all NY city schools are not as great, plus the crime), I pay skyhigh rent (3600/month), and spend 5 out 12 months indoors due to harsh weather (valuable time lost). We have always wanted to move to TX because of its weather, outdoor activities, cost friendliness, but have been held in NY for the past 4 yrs due to concerns with our son progress.
I have been following this forum for 3 yrs and have not heard alot of great reviews, however we have not given up on making TX our home. We are interested in metropolitan areas such as San Antonio, Dallas and Austin.

I would really appreciate if you can share your experience.

Thank you and God Bless.

My sister had two sons with ADD. She lives in Helotes, on the west side of San Antonio, and was very happy with not only their medical care (and she's a nurse), but was also very happy with the Helotes schools (last one graduates high school in June). I think you'll find more than adequate support for your son.

My 6 year old has ASD here in the NEISD school district. He has a similar educational set-up like your son. I am happy with his services. However, keep in mind that I have known people to move out of Texas and go to states (like CA) that provide more governmental services to their autistic children.

Will you and your DH have employment opportunities here in Texas?

I think one major culture shock that people from NY get when moving to Texas is the more conservative political climate here. It also gets very hot in the summer. Other than that, IMO the quality of life is much better here in Texas. (I have never lived in the Northeast so this is based on other people's opinions and observations).
