I went to the one on Walzem this past week and it confused me - an occasional Luby's guy since the 1960's.

"All you can eat" and Lu Ann were the only choices - no a la carte prices seen. The AYCE deal looked to be onerous as you have to wait for your waiter to fetch stuff for you, and they were scarce. However, they start you with two entrees and 4 sides which should be more than anyone could eat. I did the LuAnn for a dollar or so less than the AYCE.

Checked the website and looks like this is a one-off situation. I would not say this new deal is a last gasp of a dying restaurant since the place was packed for lunch.

IIRC, this one has always been that way. The one on Bandera Rd/Leon Valley was also that way. I used to love Luby's, but now their quality has decreased way too much. We do occasionally go as my in-laws like it, but I'd rather go just about anywhere else.

Luby's has declined so much. One part was when they cut off managers from profit sharing to pure salary, IIRC. Then the managers didn't care. Their entrees are crap, nowadays.

Am I missing something. I go to the Luby's at Bandera and 1604 about once a month. I can't say the quality of what I get has changed in that time.

Yeah, since they are Pappa's, I noticed a fast downfall. The prices are up, the portions smaller and the quality questionable. Stuff is way too fatty, and made to "taste" good, not healthy, cooked to death.
In the 90's, I was at Luby's at least twice a week (it was close to my work), but not the last 12 years. I have no desire to go there anymore.
The reviews online are also lukewarm...

The Luby's on Bandera and 1604 used to have a turkey roast, roast beef or ham on a consistent basis. Now they just have the same fried junk or weird fish in overly spiced goo.

They do have some decent vegetables. The price for iced tea is outrageous.

I miss the days when Luby's had iced tea served on carts by older ladies. It is nowhere like that now.

Growing up, it was tradition for the family go to Luby's on main after church and I remember those tea cart ladies fondly.

I visit either out of desperation, or enough time has passed for my memory of the reasons I no longer go to fade.

Sure glad I got their "cookbooks" when they offered them for sale with their own personal recipes. Now that the quality has degraded so much, it is nice to be able to "cook from scratch" those things we remember and love. You might want to check EBay or some other online site for possible cookbooks from them for sale.

Absolutely. Knew a friend's mother who worked there and verified the recipes (as much as one can when scaling things down).
