I can only speak from the cheerleading side. I don't remember how much it cost, but you do have to purchase the uniforms. And at the end of there year, they do participate in a big cheer competition. I don't remember if all teams do or not, but ours did. My girls cheered for a Pop Warner team their first year of cheerleading. After that, we decided to go to an all star cheer team.

I believe most teams do provide equipment for the football players (helmet, pads, training items, maybe even jersey and pants) but they have to return them at the end of the season. As for cheerleading, it depends where you cheer. It can range from an inexpensive uniform package for teams who do not travel to regional or national competition, to around $2,000 per girl, per year. Nationals alone costs about $900. Before you sign those papers, find out what fundraisers are mandatory, do you have to pay a fee for city or regional competition, does the organization help you with traveling expenses if you do make it. There are lots of hidden costs that they might not tell you about.
Also, ask around about the team you're going to sign up with. Its not that easy to switch teams if you don't like the one you picked first.
