Hi, new to the forum. First off I'm a stay at home mom with 2 boys; a 2 year old and my oldest who will be 4 next month. I could try to get him in for prek but we are having issues with potty, so I'm fine with him waiting til kindergarten to start school which would be august of 2017. My questions are am I looking too early for an elementary school for him? And does anyone have thoughts and/or opinions about the elementary school your kids are going to here in San antonio? Good/bad? I have done a lot of research and have some in mind to check out but I felt I should ask through a forum than trust 10-14 reviews on one school when there is between 400-1000 kids at one school. Would like to hear from some parents.
I have also looked at what questions to ask when I go do a tour for a school. I have searched through greatschools.org and I am mainly looking at schools northwest past 1604. I'm curious about Castroville elementary school which is out of district and Boerne elementary school districts... keeping my options very open. Hope to get some feedback thank you.

There are several school districts within San Antonio, and several outside SA...
I would start with the district itself. Within San Antonio, the best are NEISD, NISD, and AHISD.

What school is your child zoned to go to right now? That's where I would start. If you're near Castroville you could be Medina Valey or Northside..maybe even Southwest if you are south of 90 near 1604...

Well we do plan on moving. Basically which ever school we decide on we will move closer to it. Right now we are zoned for nisd. So there are a lot of schools. For example Julia newton aue elementary, Dr Sara b mcandrew elementary, Leon springs elementary, beard elementary, castroville elementary, Kendall elementary, fair oaks ranch elementary ... the last three are not nisd district but if we chose one of those we would move so we are in the district for him to go to school there.

All of the above mentioned schools are good schools. They're all newer, aside from Leon springs which was built in the early 90s and I don't know anything about caastroville. Of those many will steer you towards fair oaks or Kendall (didn't know that was a school). Check great schools. But know things could change a bit in that year your child is not in school.

The way that it works is that the area is divided up into different school districts, but you don't get to choose from any of the schools in the district. Your address determines the school that your child will be going to within your district, as long as that school's enrollment isn't capped. If it is, your child will go to a different school within the district. Sometimes you can apply for your child to go to a different school within the district as long as there's space at that school, and in that case you have to provide transportation to and from school for your child.
This is how to find your schools within NISD:
North Side ISD - Street Category Selection Search by street name and it will tell you what school your child will be going to, based on where you live.
There are also charter schools, and you don't have to live within a certain school district for those. They generally have waiting lists or drawings to determine who gets to attend, with preference given to students with an older sibling at the school.
If you're thinking that your son is eligible for pre-k at a public school, then I'm guessing you know about the eligibility requirements. If you're planning to qualify by income, your income may also limit where you end up living. That doesn't mean that the school in your neighborhood will not be as good as one in a more affluent area...the ratings on Great Schools are mostly about standardized test scores and a little bit about parent reviews, as far as I remember. Student performance on standardized tests is not the only thing that's important about a school. There's so much more that's more important.
Also, having a few potty issues doesn't necessarily mean that your son couldn't handle pre-k. If he's using the toilet most of the time and having an accident now and then, he would probably do fine at pre-k. They have you send spare clothes in case of accidents for pre-k and kindergarten, usually. One of my kids still had a couple of accidents in first grade. It happens.
Why don't you tell us what school your child is zoned for right now? Maybe some of us will have had experience with that school.

Just as an aside, my oldest was not interested in using the potty at all, but we sent him to a preschool that was ok with him still in diapers. Within a week he was completely potty trained.
Sometimes it just takes seeing all the other kids doing it for them to decide to do it I think.

I've had 8 years experience with Aue and 2 years, going on 3 years, experience with Leon Springs ...
Both are EXCELLENT schools and you really cannot go wrong with either ... If I was partial to one over the other, I would pick Leon Springs, but only because it is a smaller school and is a very cozy setting, there are less classrooms, and classroom size is a bit smaller ...
The principal at Leon Springs, Dr. Kathy Dodge-Clay, is amazing and is very involved in the school and its success and excellent reputation ... Many people refer to Leon Springs as a private school atmosphere in a public school setting ...
If you are focusing your research only on the schools you mentioned, then I would expand your research to the middle schools of those areas as well, as that may help you decide on an elementary school and where you want to put down your roots as far as purchasing a house...
As the mother of a 20 year old, a 14 year old and a 9 year old, let me just say that middle school years suck! ... I don't care if your child is going to NISD, NEISD, Boerne ISD, Private School, middle school children are all the same ... They are all going through hormonal changes, they are all going to start developing some sort of attitude, whether it be big or small, they are all going to start falling into some sort of group or clique ... There is no getting around this phase of life ... I have many friends with kids at Boerne middle schools and kids at private schools and suffice to say, same problems, different schools ...
I say the above because many middle schools get a bad rap ... So if you fall in love with an elementary school, don't let the middle school sway your decision too much ... Our experience has been with Rawlinson Middle School, which, in all honesty, gets a bad rap, however, we have never had a major issue with the school ... The 2 small incidents we encountered over 6 years there were both handled immediately by the Vice Principal and my husband and I were very satisfied with the final outcomes ...
There are so many threads on this forums with parents asking the same questions as you and honestly, what it all boils down to is this... As long as you, as a parent, remain active, involved and vigilant (read: All up in your childs business) then your kids will have successful school years ...
Good Luck in your decision!

Yup. My kid was already in a toddler program at the school, but was late to train. He eventually did thanks to the teachers at the school but took longer at home. Talk to the school about it.

For our location it's Hatchett, I think there are two others but can't remember the names right now. I also have no problem driving him to and from to any school, I actually don't want him riding the bus at all so again totally fine dropping him off and picking him up. Would it be too late to get him into prek for august 2016? I refuse for mine to attend hatchett and the couple other schools that are assigned to my address. The children in my area are very rude, and our neighbors in my neighborhood have had many problems with kids of all ages; stealing, tagging, damaging property, rude to other children. I understand that is everywhere but we have friends that live out past 1604 that it doesn't happen on a weekly basis. We can afford to live in a nicer area so that's why we are okay with moving closer to better schools. I appreciate everyone's comments so far.
