The San Antonio Independent School District is offering a unique solution for parents struggling to tear their teenagers away from the computer screen — and help them create a bright future in much-needed career fields.
SAISD announced Thursday that it has partnered with advocacy group Tech Bloc to open the first of what will eventually be a network of career-themed high schools throughout the city, which collectively will be called the Centers for Applied Science and Technology.

H-E-B and its CEO, Charles Butt, provided $3.6 million in startup funds for the network. The first school, called CAST Tech, will be located in downtown San Antonio, although the exact location is still undecided. It will focus on technology and entrepreneurship and eventually will enroll about 600 students 9th through 12th — 50 percent will come from within SAISD and 50 percent from the rest of Bexar County.

I think it's great - let's face it, not all kids are cut out for college, and there are a LOT of good careers for folks with the aptitude and willingness to work with their hands. Wish they'd do the same for plumbing and other trade skills!

Coding, animation, and cybersecurity aren't work with your hands fields outside of typing and moving a mouse, but this is great. These types of jobs typically do require the aptitude one would need to get through a degree program in IT or computer science, which is why kids will come out of this program with 30 college credits.
