Steel Man, not sure what the comment about 27 minutes is supposed to mean (that I'm discouraged in 27 minutes more than one minute), but anyway, the problem with base housing is that, as someone before you mentioned, there is a long wait list and we have heard that the area is less than desirable. You are absolutely right, no one said that $1000/mo is "chump-change", it just seems to me that that is the case. I respect your opinion, because I know you are probably well-versed in this sort of situation. My husband and I were trying to buy a house that we could start building a future for our family (financially). I know that renting one, that is going to cost us just as much money per month is probably not going to do that. I'm sure you understand what I mean.

I really do appreciate everyone's opinion about our situation. We are total "newbies" at this, and we really want to make the best decision. We will definately take everyone's advice into consideration. Thanks so much!

ARe you enlisted or officer? The enlisted housing on base looks nice to me. THe area around base is less than desirable, but I don't see why base housing wouldn't be good. The other thing to consider is how big of a house are you looking for? I just saw a 2/2 in Westcreek 78253 within your range.

I have a suggestion. Move into base housing until you get established and become familiar with the area. There is no lease with base housing. The worst thing you could do is buy a home without knowing the area and end up wishing you'd bought in a different area. Also, this is not an advertisment, but there is a subdivision, like Silver Oaks, (centex- and NO CITY TAXES), Siera Springs (DR Horton, I think), and a few others where homes start at 110K and you qualify for VA as military, low interest rates, no PMI, zero down, and even then with insurance and esgrow I think you'd be looking at 900-ish (but I'm not a professional so who knows). I'm financing $160 and with EVERYTHING will pay under $1200, insurance included... oh, and I did not to use the VA so the $1180 included PMI (which you don't have to pay with VA). I think you can afford more than you realize. Plenty of things in the $120 range.

Get a map. Anything outside of 1604 is usually a decent area and USUALLY doesn't have city taxes with the exception of a few annexed areas. No city taxes makes a huge difference.

Thanks to you two ladies for the uplifting comments!

I do agree that maybe we should just rent for a little while. We have crunched the numbers, and know what our payments would be on what amounts. We are just trying to avoid me having to go back to work because I am in Nursing school.

Anyway, we will keep looking. Thanks so much, I feel a little better about everything today
