My husband I and (and family) have been contemplating moving for quite awhile. We jump between Northern California, Phoenix and Texas, but just can't seem to make a decision...or are scared to make the wrong one. I have always heard nice things about San Antonio. What's it like? How does it compare to other cities in Texas? What are the communities and schools like? Are people reasonably friendly? Do you like living there? I am just trying to gather as much information as I can about different areas...to do my research before making a BIG decision. We have our own business, so relocation is not an issue. Thanks for any help that you are able to offer up...I really, really appreciate it!!!

It would help if you listed what you're looking for. San Antonio and Austin are much smaller metro areas than Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston even though the city of San Antonio, itself, has more people than Dallas. San Antonio is predominantly Hispanic while Austin is predominantly white. Dallas and Houston are very ethnically diverse. Houston is an international city while San Antonio still has a small town feel. I would even say that Austin has somewhat of a small town feel. Most of Texas is pretty much the same in terms of friendliness, from my experience. San Antonio is very family-oriented while Austin still has remnants of being a college town.

I grew up and lived in so cal for 38 years. We moved to the outskirts of Tucson in 2008 and have moved to San Antonio area in Oct of 15. Phx is hot , melt your skin away. Phx is a mini los Angeles from the 90's . More to do in phx area then Tucson .depends on your lifestyle rush or relax. Arizona is ranked 47th for education, Phx is better then Tucson in that area. Austin is a cool town to visit.wouldnt want to live there. Way to crowded for a small area. Houston is busy, like L.A, phx and Austin. Houston is just to humid for my taste.

We are very happy with our decision moving to San Antonio. Lots to do here for adults and growing kids. There are variou things to do.

I completely agree with L210....You should try visiting. If you come to San Antonio rent a car and drive to Austin then Houston or Dallas. Stay a few days get a feel. Each city has a different feel. My wife and I live and San Antonio. We love San Antonio but you may feel different. I also lived in Houston but did not like it much. I would like to point out that at the time I lived there I wasn't living in the most desired part of Houston so that had a lot to do with me not liking it now that I look back. You might like Houston or Austin more. We have our spots we like in each one of these city's. Each one has bad and good parts. I guess I should ask you what you are looking for in a city??

Yup, be more specific, there is significant differences to DFW and Houston (population / weather / traffic),

Austin has traffic too!!!!! SA is a 'breeze' in comparison.

DFW gets tornadoes, Houston gets hurricanes and floods.
Flash flood potential in SA or Aus.... So stay HIGH.

Schools.... What age? Generally SA and AUS have pretty decent schools for K-12. There are many options elsewhere, and better choices than public schools. Free college instead of HS was nice choice for our kids (not in TX)!

Jobs?
Hobbies / interests?
Skills?
Future? (Access to colleges / health issues)
Need VA access?

I think San Antonio traffic is pretty bad what makes things smoother is the extensive freeway infrastructure a system made for a city much larger than 2.41 million.

Just say NO to Dallas/Ft. Worth unless you love tons of traffic everywhere and enjoy rough icy winters and tornado sirens going off all spring. I commute to Ft. Worth from San Antonio, and I hate this place with a passion. The traffic and weather are horrible. I want to go home!!!!

Your family should visit those places before making "big decision" and moving in.
You already "explored" Phoenix area, but we have our own subjective opinion. What we love, you might hate and vice versa...
Nothing better than visit, look around and get your own vibe about the places.
When you find the one you like, we can help you with the details.
