I just got a text message from (supposedly) SSFCU's fraud department saying there was possible fraud activity on my account, then the number linked in the message called me. I answered and it was a recording and they wanted my zip code so I hung up and decided to just call SSFCU's main line. I was put on hold and they're having a high number of calls right now--did anyone else get this today? I'm in the callback queue because the hold time was quoted to be 35 minutes. I googled the 877 number given in the text and some people say it's a legit number and others say it's a phishing number. I guess I'll see in about 30 minutes or so.

It's not a huge transaction but it IS fraudulent, if it's a real call.

Now I received an email and there's been (allegedly) 3 transactions right in a row from Philadelphia, PA. Weird day. I'm just thinking with the high call volume they're experiencing that it may be a big scam? Hopefully! I know SSFCU is a little over-reactive to potential fraud but it's hard to blame them.

It was fraud. Good job, SSFCU.

Wow, I guess I lucked out because I have several SSFCU accounts but didn't get hit. Very glad they caught it so fast and you weren't damaged by the fraud! Did you find out if the 877 number or the emails were legit?

Yes, both were legit. One of the "who called me?" sites had people saying it was legit and others saying it was not. I thought it was strange that they wanted me to input my zip code but I called them at the number on the back of my card and didn't have to wait at all and they immediately froze my card. I ran into a branch and got a new one right away. I've been irritated with SSFCU in the past for freaking out about innocent transactions but I guess I learned my lesson, they are really good at preventing a disaster in your account!

The email looked sketchy -- they had a screenshot of the last several transactions and it just bugged me but yep, legit too.

Why would you be worried about imputing your zip code? I certainly wouldn't put in my credit card number or ss#, but zip code?

But calling directly instead of a number that you cannot verify is better anyway.

I think in this time and age.. most people are wary of anything ... its gotten to the point where you cant even trust when someone is telling you the truth anymore.

Whenever I use my card at the pump, they want my zip code. It's something that a hacker would want to know.

Not only that, but maybe the first time they get your zip.
The second time they ask for the answer to one of your security questions.
The third time they get something else.
Next thing you know, they've gotten all the information they need to call and make changes to your account.

You did they right thing by just calling a number you KNOW is good.

Ah, ok I see. Yes, I get the connection. I never would have thought of it, but I'm a trusting soul.
