I feel that kids raised by parents who are involved in their lives will be molded correctly. I teach my kids to think before making a decision, and if they do make a wrong decision, I explain to them why it was wrong, and the consequences. I also feel that when needed, I break out the belt.
My wife talked about putting them in private schools (like they won’t be exposed to anything there) and even home schooling (really?). I told her that I wanted my kids to have a social life, be exposed to the elements, and learn from both. We’re there to monitor, and I think we’ll be able to tell if things go south. And at that point, if it got to that point, we would reevaluate the situation.

Taft really isn't that bad- I knew ALOT of people that went to/ graduated from Taft- really good nice kids. Unless Taft has changed in the past 4 years, I really don't think you have to worry so much about that.....

We need to crack down on these gangs. Hire the sheriff out in Maricopa County as a consultant and build a tent city that can hold 8000. Round them all up based on their tattoos and stupid gang signs and let them enjoy the San Antonio summer the way our ancestors did.
That or find an active tar pit and give them an up close lesson on what happened to some of the dinosaurs..

Most schools are not THAT bad, nothing has changed !!! I know most of the people on here havnt been in high school in MANY MANY years lol, so maybe its hard to imagine what its like. But it really is not that bad. I went to both SAISD and NEISD, and graduated a few years ago and it TRULY is not bad. I dont even remember gangs in schools haha. There are a lot of good kids, and the fact is if your child is a good kid already they wont get influenced into gangs. Now Drugs or getting in trouble....maybe, thats everywhere.....but not gangs, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than getting in trouble or hanging with a weird crowd. I often found that most kids were involved in something in school and that helps in keeping away from influences.

Teen Arrested In 2006 Homicide - San Antonio News Story - KSAT San Antonio
Ironically I saw this online today. The guy is 19 now, guessing he was of high school age when he did this. Obviously he wasn't a kid who was focused on senior prom and grades!
Military and Marbach area I believe.

I can't stand it when they call them a documented gang member. If it's known, throw them in a hole somewhere.

yep, that, and a lot of single parents, primarily moms i'm betting.... no money, no parenting skills - he//, no LIFE skills, period..... and likely dead tired most of the time, if NOT drunk or on drugs.....
very very scary times for raising children....
Sapphire, I have known people in California and even in Ohio, who would enroll the kids using someone else's address, like a relative's or a friend's, etc.... not the best and most honest choice, but I have seen some people do it, because of the very situation you speak of....
Good luck to you......

If your son stays within his circle of friends, who aren't interested in being in a gang (hopefully), he will be fine. All he has to do is stay out of their way, and he has nothing to worry about. If he stays busy with sports, or other extracurricular activities, he won't have time to mess with or worry about gangs. Most gangs memebers aren't intrested in "do-gooders". They want the "badboys/girls" in their gangs, the rebels. People involved with school activities generally are considered "school boys". Trust me I went to Jeff, 99-03. Jeff had it's fair share of gang members, but I personally didn't know any. Between class, choir activities, theater productions, newspaper, and yearbook, I hardly had time for anything! But I did see the tagging in the bathroon, and on some of my desks.

I know! I knew a lot of people who graduated from Taft in 02, 03, & 04, NONE of them were gang memebers or ever talked about a gang problem at Taft.
