What are you paying for 100Mb/s with the San Antonio Company Spectrum? Please vote in this poll with your monthly rate.

Note, this poll is only for people who have "JUST INTERNET" and do NOT have a cable subscription or any other services. JUST INTERNET please. I would like to compare apples to apples here. It seems there are different rates depending on the services bundled and it would be too hard to poll all the different options. Its much simpler (and potentially more shocking in the price difference) when comparing apples to apples.

Also note, this poll is only for people who have the 100Mb/s internet services. If you have any other speed then 100Mb/s, please do not vote in this poll. No extra services like "wi-fi" etc. Again, apples to apples.

The reason for this poll: I just got off the phone with a very unpleasant, seemingly agitated from the start, customer service rep from Spectrum. During our conversation she shockingly admitted that there are different prices for different people for the same exact service. This may make sense for someone who bundles service but I just have internet and have only had internet for a while now. She knew that because she was telling me this after she told me details about my plan.

So basically, there are AT LEAST 3 different prices for the exact same service for different people from Spectrum even if you are getting just the exact same internet speed (no other services or add ons).

What is your rate for 100Mb/s internet?

Keep in mind, a $10 difference per month is $120 per year. What could you do with an extra $120?

A little more:
I was grandfathered in when Time Warner Cable switched to Spectrum recently. I was paying for 200Mb/s. I am cutting costs where I can. After doing various speed tests over the past year, and installing an actual network monitor, I noticed the ONLY time I was getting 200MB/s+ was when I was running internet speed tests. Most uses for all of us, even with gaming, Neflix streaming, You Tube etc., only use around 2-10Mb/s.

Internet websites do not seem to transmit this fast (200Mb/s). That kind of speed for websites like CNN/You Tube, banking websites etc. isn't really needed anyway. Even with hardcore gaming I noticed I was only getting around 2-3MB/s. I thought that was slow but honestly, that was all that was needed for steady/smooth gameplay. The Steam client only downloads games anywhere from 1MB/s - 7MB/s. Windows update when doing updates only updated at around 1Mb/s to 3Mb/s (if lucky). Updates to various applications and software are the same. I could go on and on with this list. Basically, practically no website/server you connect to is going to utilize 200MB/s. Even torrenting large files doesn't upload anywhere close to 200Mb/s. Paying for this package is just excessive if you wont ever utilize it. I encourage you to download/install a network monitoring meter to see for yourself.

So I told this rep this information and she vehemently wanted me to keep the service I had even though I told her multiple times I don't need it. This was fine, she was just trying to "retain a customer at a higher rate". What company wants to lose a degree of profit?

What shocked me was that she told me downgrading and going to 100Mb/s would be $69.99 per month. I told her that it couldn't be that as it shows $39.99 on the Spectrum website for 100Mb/s. She said that is for new customers. I said that's fine but I told her my girlfriend has the same speed (100Mb/s) with no other services and she pays $49.00 per month. The CS rep got angry and said "I don't know what your girlfriend has", "we are not going to discuss what someone else has". I told her she has exactly the samespeed (100Mb/s) and nothing else. I also said its strange that the price quoted, what my girlfriend honestly pays for the same speed and what you at quoting me at are all different. That's when she shockingly told me that there are different rates for different customers. I then asked her if there was a website I can go on to get the information. She was reluctant to give this information but said I could call corporate if I have a problem with the fees. After arguing back and forth she finally told me that she would try her discount but she didn't think it would work. Then she told me it worked. So instead of paying $59.99 like she wanted me to, and $39.99 like is posted publically on the Spectrum website, I am paying $49.99 (a price in between).

So basically, there are AT LEAST 3 different prices for the exact same service for different people from Spectrum even if you are getting just the exact same internet speed (no other services). $39.99, $49.99, $59.99 (what they were trying to get me to pay until I argued with them).

Beware Spectrum customers. There are different prices for the exact same service (with no extras) depending on who you are.

What are you paying for 100MB/s (internet only) from Spectrum?
Are you liking this monopoly on broadband internet service that Spectrum/TWC has for San Antonio?

To be honest here... this is exactly why I quit them. I knew that I was paying more for service that everyone else was receiving at a better cost then I was and I had been a loyal customer of theirs for 19 years. One day I decided to call them and see where I could get a break from them. At the time I had ALL of their offerings to include phone and cable and all the show channels. Their response? Our special offers are for new customers only. So guess what.. one of these days I will be a new customer again.. just not now.

But to be honest.. they really do not have a monopoly. There are other options in this town. And Google will be here before you know it!

Yes, there should be a fixed price for everyone. Giving new people better rates over loyal customers is a good way to drive them away. It drove you away and it likely drove others away too. Maybe if you call them back they may give you a better rate.

What other options are there for high speed broadband internet besides Spectrum for MOST (or at least 50% of) San Antonio people?

As of today, for most of San Antonio, I don't think there is another option that offers the Speed (100 mbps download) that Spectrum does.

Grande is available at my address, and they can offer me up to 400 mbps download, but Grande's service area in San Antonio is small, and as far as I can tell, they halted their expansion here several years ago. Grande does offer 1 gig service in some of their service area here, but not at my address. No word as to whether they plan to further expand their 1 gig service here.

AT&T services are available to about as many local residents as Spectrum, but at my address at least, 45 mbps is the top speed offered. Contractors for AT&T came though my neighborhood last summer and laid new fiber, and shortly afterward, some of my neighbors posted on NextDoor that they had their AT&T 1 gig service up and running (whoohoo!). No word as to whether AT&T plans to extend fiber service throughout the rest of the neighborhood, or other parts of the city that don't have it.

Google came through here right behind AT&T last summer, but their service isn't live yet. No ETA as to when they plan to have it up and running, and as to whether their fiber service availability will be widespread, or "here & there" like AT&T and Grande.

If Google does indeed make their fiber service available to the majority of San Antonio (and media reports suggest it will be), I would look for expanded offerings from competitors, or price-cutting on their existing slower speed services. For those customers whose only choice is Spectrum if they want something faster than 45 mbps, there may be no incentive for Spectrum to offer better pricing.

We don't have internet only, so I didn't vote in your poll. However, each year when our prices are scheduled to go up, we call, ask to speak with the customer retention dept, and ask what they can do so we can maintain the same pricing we've had the previous 4 years. It's a pain to do and I wish we didn't need to, but they always meet us at the same price and sometimes have added additional channels at no additional cost.

Based on our experience with Time Warner/Spectrum and other large companies, what you discovered isn't anything new and I believe it is a fairly common occurrence.

Thanks for your response. While its still very early in the poll results, upon reviewing the poll results so far, it confirms what you stated and I discovered through my phone conversation with Spectrum: there are different prices for the exact same service (with no extras) depending what Spectrum feels like charging you.

Reviewing the poll results shows this varies quite a bit. Seems like quite a few are overpaying/paying more then people in the exact same boat as them (been with Time Warner over a year).

I pay $69.99. $59.99 + $10 for the 'extreme internet'.

I canceled tv with them last year and went with Directv. I can only get 7mbps with uverse so I kept TW. When they told me the price I couldn't believe it. I asked for a better rate and they nicely told me that was the best they could do. They even called my bluff about cancelling and were starting the process. I'm guessing since I dropped the other services they wern't going to let me go easy. I would love to switch, but i don't have any other options.

Yes, despite what people are saying, there is not another broadband provider in San Antonio that provides broadband services to at least 50% of the people who live in San Antonio. The next closest broadband high speed internet provider to Spectrum is Grande, but they only cover 28% of San Antonio.

Grande offering broadband service to only 28% of people here in SA is no where near the majority (at least 51%). 28% is also no where near 98% coverage, like Spectrum. That means that even if you live in a populated and active part of the city like me, with Grande offering only a 28% coverage area, chances are, Spectrum is your only choice for high speed broadband.

If only 1 company is your only choice for a product/service (in this case broadband speed internet), that by definition is a monopoly. Spectrum is a monopoly for 72% of San Antonio residents and if we want broadband internet, we are at the mercy of Spectrum pricing. Which, as we see from this poll, varies greatly from person to person for the exact same speed/service with no extras. I'd hate to see the variation in what Spectrum is charging person to person when cable TV subscriptions are bundled in with internet. Probably even more disparity and craziness then just internet by itself.

What I do know is that this poll is showing that quite a few people here are paying more then their peers for the exact same thing.

Are you overpaying for the exact same service?

Again, only a $10 per month difference is $120 per year. Quite a bit of cash. What could you do with $120?
