Does anyone remember the Slot Car Race Track that was in the lower level of Wonderland Mall? Near the Toy Box store.

Ahhh Shakeys ... remember the little hats you use to get if it was a birthday party.. and the pianolla? the old Shakeys on Fred. turned into a Japanese restaurant - Fujiya? - in the late 90's....and no one mentioned the old drive-in on the corner of 281 and bitters... it used to be we here we all hung out during the summers of 81/82 on Monday nights.. we could get a car load of 11 and 12th graders in for $5, then just cruise around from movie to movie... brings back memories of Mad Max/Thunderdome.

The big hang out for the Holmes students was the land that was to become Ingram Park Mall. I had an aunt that lived out in Helotes and we would always search for the Donkey Lady. Luckily, we never found her. I remember the KKYX towers. they were like the only thing until you got to Helotes and the rock tower that was on a hill near 1604. I think the open air mall refered to on Fredrickburg was called Northwest Center. I worked for two weeks at the Asia Restaurant that was next to a cleaners at the corner of the center. Anybody remember Globe Shopping city? They had everything under the sun. Anybody ever get the tennis shoes from Gibsons? They were black canvas with white stripes and the soles were 1/4" thick rubber? I remember getting them every August before I went back to school. I think they cost 50 cents or 4 for a dollar. Then came Addidas and Nike and there went the cheap shoes. Smuboy, my mom would drag me to the Solo Serve on San Pedro. Agony, torture although I thought the Swiss Chalet looked kind of cool. I also had my money, all $32 at the Travis S&L. Does anyone remember the ABC Pest Control jingle? I can still sing it to this day. And Beldon Roofing had a house/building quickly go up while Classical Gas was playing. And if you're bug embarrassed call Mr. Harris 225-3021.
irnag.... you refer to 'Stroids... it used to behind Swensons Ice Cream, across the street from what would eventually be Ingram Park Mall. remember you used to have to go behind that little strip mall and just drive down a dark bumpy road until you go to the bottom, veryone would hang out there after football games, some times with a bonfire.....(I'm Holmes class of '83) guess it must've been and old quarry of some sorts...

That's when Apple Records (used records) opened up there for a while.

There was also a Handy Andy at the Colonies North center on I10/Wurzbach where Big Lots is located now. The mall there included a cinema, but I didn't go there often.

I notice a lot of the Big Lots today look similar - a very large ranch roof with high front window. I wonder if they all used to be Handy Andy stores with a "not-so-mini-mall".
Oz - your pretty on the money re: Big Lots.. just about all of them have been converted to B.L. except the one on Blaco and West Avenue... that one became a Marshalls, FYI the Big Lots on Evers north of 410, was a Marshalls before it bcame a Big Lots.....

Yep, the Marshalls on Walzem indeed was a Handy-Andy. The Oak Park H-E-B at Nacogdoches and North New Braunfels was also a Handy Andy and Oak Park Mall (I helped open that H-E-B in 1995 as part of my 6 1/2 years with them). Midnight Rodeo on Thousand Oaks was a really nice Handy Andy in the late 70s/early 80s and it had a car port on the south side of the building which I think is still there serving as a patio.

Handy Andy also had a store at Thousand Oaks and Jones-Maltsberger which opened when I was in high school at Mac. It closed around 1992-1993, was torn down and replaced by the H-E-B in 1994.

I clearly remember the Handy Andy at Central Park Mall and I know it had a very epicurian selection; lots of hard to find items there.

Here's another one from the olden days at Central Park: G.C. Murphy and Co. Anyone remember where that was in the mall?
