The answer is easy...in San Antonio, everyone ate at Lubys! (Talk about another place that has really gone down hill!)
I always remember the Luby's at Central park seemed nicer, and upscale...I guess because it was dark green on the inside. It is only a matter of time before ALL Luby's become chinese buffets.

Yeah, I just noticed that they closed the Luby's at Bandera near Wurzbach. Another one bites the dust.

When I was a youngster (I'm 53) we'd usually go to the Tee Pee or Big John's for steak, Hung Fong or Tai Shan for Chinese, El Rancho or Casa Rio for Mexican, Naples for Italian, Bavarian Inn for German, Bun & Barrel or Vic's Smokehouse for BBQ, and Bassett's, Jims Frontier, or Pig Stand for casual variety.
These restaurants were often visited after first stopping by one of the NE/Austin Hwy. watering holes such as The Tavern on the Green, Elbow Room, French Quarter, Rustic Lounge, etc... .

Hey Been There B4, thanks for the memory jog. I am 41 and remember eating at the Bavarian Inn a few times as a kid (great schnitzel). Where were they located and is the building still there? I am drawing a blank.

Yes, AWESOME schnitzel. I think I remember the restaurant being located on 6th St., east of Broadway. Don't know if the building is still there.
Soon after moving to SA in 1955, my mom and dad started going to a small oyster bar downtown on Houston St. Dad was an oyster fanatic and he soon introduced me - simply as a test - to my first raw oyster when I was about 18 months old. He could not believe that I ate the whole thing and wanted more! I've long forgotten the name of the place. Does anyone out there remember?

I believe the Bavarian Inn became a Gay club after it was closed. The men would display themselves in the parking lot. It was located next to an office bldg that housed SW Bell employees. This behavior so outraged the management of Bell Tele. Co, that I believe they had the bldg razed. This was a big stink in the newspapers in the late seventies, if my memory serves me right. Anyone else remember this?

Was it just my imagination or did the Tee Pee have the best steak and biscuits in the world and the Frontier have the best hamburger and onion rings... I bet if someone could replicate these old style places that they would be an instant hit.

Cookiemeister:
If enough people contacted Jim Haslocker (Jim's Restaurant); he might be tempted to serve the Frontier burger again in Jim's, since Jim's and Frontier are the same people.

Thanks, mud!
I knew I was forgetting a favorite ---- THE BEAN POT!!! Holy cow, that was good stuff. Two big black pots of pinto beans - one mild and one hot, and they always tasted right on the money. Forgot, though, which Tassos family member ran it.
Big John's Oyster Bar --- of course! Man, that was back when oysters were a mouthful, unlike today's quarter-sized midgets,,, and huge boiled shrimp, too. We could never go to Big john's without first getting the obligatory dozen --- then the T-Bone.
