mudpuddle - I love that pic of you dad on the bike. I was going to ask what brand but you answered in the last post. I use to ride with a guy (1962) named Paul Alsbury that drove a red bike and I am quite sure it was an Indian. He was a large person and I saw him kick in car doors that cut him off on his bike. He was a scarry dude. We use to ride Contour drive (winding road) and the horse trails in Brackenridge park at night in the summer. The first rider was clear, the second third etc. caught the horse dung and dirt dust. He became a SA cop, went bad, pulled some jobs, and ended up in prison and then committed suicide.

I knew an old guy who was machinist and before that a motorcycle mechanic. He told me stories about the military guys stationed here who would buy motorcycles to get around. Most of the guys he knew were at either Kelly or Lackland. Some of them would drive down the Castroville highway (Hiway 90 now) and find places to stay. It was a short hop on a fast bike to get to Castroville. Other guys would go home on these bikes on weekends..even as far as Oklahoma. I think this might be how the whole biker thing started.

My husband rode a motorcycle as his main mode of transport for years while he was in the Marine Corps. He rode it home to San Antonio from DC many times.

He drives a big ol' pickup now...and misses his bike!

There are lots of great places to ride motorcycles outside of San Antonio. The infamous 33's (335, 336 and 337) in the Hill Country are wonderful rides...especially 335 north out of Barksdale. That has to be the best road in the state!

Unfortunately, riding motorcycles within 1604 has gotten quite dangerous and I leave my bikes in the garage until the weekends.

Cheers! M2

My first bike (1956 Truimph Thunderbird 650) - For me 1961 was a good year - custom pipes with megaphones, chrome battery and oil box and extra chrome items.
The tailight fixture was dubbed donkey dong.
Notice the white socks, Tom Mcan loafers, no Stacy Adams, and I also had hair.

La Paloma Mexican Restaurant – In 1956 location Fredericksburg rd. just north of Vance Jackson approx. Burger King site. Mrs. Arranda (sp) the owner, a very petite woman, after closing for the evening certain nights, would move the tables and chairs and host ballroom dancing, cha cha etc for her friends, to the sounds of a 78 rpm record player. She also taught dancing. My parents were friends and would go for dinner then stay to dance.
