Anyone know the history of an old iron bridge that's close to E. Houston St.? You can't miss seeing when you're on IH-37 headed north. It's an odd shaped road, not curved, but at a sharp angle. Was it perhaps a private road to ship from many of the warehouses in the area? (Think of Merchant's Ice Storage - katty corner to present day Spaghetti Warehouse) The bringe is beyond that, close to where they still have the stalls for the horse carriages.

For some reason they closed down Hays St. There is a sign on Austin St. and on Hays St. that may be a clue, but I can't read the sign from G-maps. Type in 782 Cherry San Antonio and go to street view. Gives a good view of the bridge. And a clearance of 10'8" going under the bridge.

Oh, if you go to 758 N Cherry, the bridge says Southern Pacific on it.

That would be the Hayes Street Bridge, actually two RR spans brought here from Louisiana in 1910. The bridge(s) were condemned in 2001 as being structurally unsafe and there is an on-going effort to preserve them and to make it a walk-way and bicycle path. I cannot say for sure where it is right now but I have lived in SA long enough to say "I've driven over that bridge". Google "Hays Street Bridge San Antonio" and you'll find more than you ever wanted to know about it....

BTW, hello all, this is my very first post on City-Data and I live in the Culebra-Potranco-151 & 1604 corridor.

Yea, some guy called the old man a communist and Henry B punched him. I think Henry B was a boxer at one time.

There's an old Whataburger building (A-frame) just this side of a La Fiesta on Bandera Rd. not real far from Hillcrest and it's on the right-hand side as you're going towards town. It has been at least two different taquerias in the last 18 months. This is probably the one.
