I also remember us girls having to pull our hair (you remember the style, long, parted in the middle, straight) in front of us during passing periods because there were rumors that some of the kids that started the riots were going to get even by trying to cut off our hair.....A very bad situation at any rate, one that I hope our kids don't have to deal with.

I don't know if the information is out there. You may try the archives of the Express-News.

Basically, what I remember is, the school district (SAISD) closed down Wheatley HS, which was predominately African-American, and bussed them to Highlands and possibly another school. The kids from Wheatley were upset that their HS had been closed and that they were bussed off elsewhere. Highlands at the time was predominately white and hispanic, and the bad feelings that the Wheatley kids had turned into a major racial issue. I don't remember much else, other than trying to stay out of the way during passing periods for fear of either being shoved out of the way or someone grabbing my hair or one of my friends' hair and cutting it off.

Perhaps scythempress might have a better memory of what happened.

I do remember staying home from school for a few days, until everything cooled down.

Hey everyone! I'm was down in SA this past weekend and I spent a few hours sorta doing a GBNF tour of my own. Of course I had to stop by WPM and see what has become of it. It looks like there is some sort of business where the Mervyn's used to be. Not exactly sure what it was, looked like offices. And they have started bulldozing the entrance that was between Dillards and JCPenney. And of course the whole perimeter of the mall is fenced off so I couldn't do too much exploring. I took some pics in case some of y'all who don't live in SA want to see.
I also checked out The Galaxy (now Rialto) to see what was up. At least it's still a movie theatre but I miss the big Galaxy marquee listing the movies that are playing. I also went down Austin Hwy to Broadway and went down Broadway towards downtown. From Broadway, went through Brackenridge Park and went over 281 and eventually made it to Hildebrand. Went down Hildebrand and turned right onto San Pedro and went all the way down till right before NSM (traffic was pretty bad there). I backtracked and got onto to 281 to make it back to my mom's house. It was cool seeing some of the locations that have been mentioned on here most of which I had never seen or hadn't seen in a looooooooong time. There are still other areas that I wanna check out next time I have a chance.

It's Rackspace. They bought the mall a year ago, and are moving their entire HQs there. They are spending a 100 million on the facility.
