My favorite "ride" at Kiddie Park was the self-powered cart which had a big wheel that you turned by hand (with two hand pedals) and went around a little railroad-style track.
The rollercoaster at Playland Park was the best one I've ever ridden. I've ridden all the ones at Six Flags in Dallas and San Antonio. The funhouse was genuinely scary. I used to have nightmares about it.
It's funny because I have "issues" with people my age or older who I think should have gone to Playland Park and never did.

How funny - I can still hear G.G. Gale's voice coming on the radio with his advertisements. I think it was for Timberwood Park - does anyone remember?
My brothers and sisters and I were reminiscing not long ago about the Saturday afternoon matinees/shows you mentioned. We were referencing it in a discussion with nieces and nephews - they thought we were out of our mind!
I'm not certain but I believe Dentler-Facs merged with Frito Lay (Fritos by the way were invented in San Antonio). Frito Lay moved their corporate headquarters to Dallas. I don't know when but remember I was young and can remember my parents talking about it.

What about the original Joske's when it was still owned by the family?????? Their Christmas window and Fantasy Land! Shirley Brown Saddlery. Mr. Jackson in Joske's Diamond Salon. That store was the soul of San Antonio.

Big Hips and Little Hipps Bubble Room!
I remember both! I wasn't here when Big Hipps closed, but it wasn't that long ago when Little Hipps shut their doors. People were waiting in line all night to be one of the last to their yummy giagantic burgers! Didn't they open up a new restaraunt near Bulverde?
I remember the summers between college years...Bombay Bicycle Club, Tycoon Flats, and Little Hipps!.....the rest was a blur...   |

I couldn't agree with you more, Flat! I LOVED working at Joske's downtown. Although by the time I worked there they no longer had Fantasy Land, I have great memories of seeing it as a child. And, it paid to have friends who worked in the display areas and would show us around all the "old stuff" hidden away! |

Ahhhh... BROCK's - I was trying to remember the name of that store and was drawing a blank. I remember going in there often, and when they closed. Sad day - it was such a neat place. |

I grew up on the NW side (1969-1988) and now live on the NE side of town.
Here are a few places I remember fondly, but haven't seen mentioned yet:
Christie's seafood restaurant on Broadway
Aunt Julie's restaurants (one on Bandera and one on 281 & Nakoma)
Pre-food court Ingram Park Mall (McDonald's was located by Sears)
Bluebonnet Palace in Selma
The name of the Holmes High hangout near Ingram Mall was Stroud's.
How about Jim's Drive-in on Babcock just outside the loop? I remember you ordered from that line of speakers, then drove up to the window to pick up your food.
La Semana Allegre was fun in the 80's if you didn't mind getting coated with beer! Saw alot of great bands there!
Who else 4-wheeled up Comanche Hill before it became a park?
