Yeah, it was a real shocker when Winn's went under. I know some of you posting are to young to recall but someones got to remember the root beer place. About half way between Theo and hwy 90 on the west side of Nogalitos there was a small bldg. with an awning out front (to park under) served frosted root beer in mugs. They had carhops and I'm quite sure it was A&W root beer. It may have been just to the south of a little (bar) ice house with an odd kind of corner(of the bldg.) entrance. This is probably 60's I'm remembering when they were in business. Pretty sure the bldg. is or was still there in recent years.

well my mom grew up on thompson since the 1940's. my good friends the montez' moved to the area in 1950 and they all say it is the current place which is called Rosas Tacos, who is the former cook to Henry Tacos which closed up shop a few months ago. the odd entranced building is now a cleaners.
what the montez' distinctly remember is their cars being egged and burnt crosses in their front yard because they were latinos...needless to say they stuck it out.

Sounds like it! Don't recall any cross burning stuff. Must have been a 40's thing. I've always thought this city was better along those lines. But, there's always idiots out there somewhere.

G.W.'s was probably closed late 70's. Eckards was likely around to late 80's or early 90's. My memory just not that good . I have to relate things to other things or events to recall sometimes.

I think GW was gone around 1986, and winn's around 1995.

OH...and the Handy Andy, between theo and malone...will be missed along with the laundry mat, my mother use to take us too. And one last thing...Does anyone remember the name of the mexican restaurant that use to be across the street from the old handy andy on Nogalitos. I think a family dollar is there now on theo.

La Canasta? I remember the owner was friends with many movie stars from Mexico.
