I believe the "blue laws" ended around 1985. I started working at the Bandera/410 Target when Target first came to San Antonio in 1983, but we were only open Monday through Saturday at first. A few years before I quit, which was 1987, we started opening on Sundays, when the blue laws were no more. As an incentive to get us to work on Sundays, they paid us time and a half and they were still doing that when I left in 1987! I'm sure that didn't last too much longer.

Going back to Wonderland Mall, I think the "exterior" stores were only on the side of the mall along Fredericksburg Road.

The Doc Holliday's was right inside the loop there. I don't remember any of the later names of the club.

I remember the Blue Laws...I always thought it was strange when they roped off certain aisles and you weren't allowed to buy anything that was on those roped off aisles. My mother always complained because she couldn't buy panty hose on Sundays as it was one of the things deemed unallowable on Sunday!! Go figure!

I also remember the stores at Wonderland that were only accessible from outside the mall. I thought they were facing the parking lot towards Fredericksburg Rd..between where Montgomery Wards and the Handy Andy were located? Am I remembering this wrongly?

And I thought Doc Hollidays was in that strip center off 410 there to the right when you exited at Fred. Rd coming from Bandera Rd?

I got some blouses and skirts there that I could wear to work at Target on Bandera and 410--which also no longer exists!

Someone mentioned Penn Foods at Callaghan and 10. That was a great place to get homecoming mums.

I remember the Tandy's at Wonderland too. That was back when Wonderland had stores outside the mall that, if I'm remembering correctly, you could not get into from inside the mall. I also remember getting snacks at the food place in Woolworth's at Wonderland.

Does anyone else remember the club called Doc Holliday's in a strip center on 410 and Fredericksburg Road?
I certainly do remember Doc Holidays. I went there a lot in the early 80s being that I leaved just down the street at the High Ridge Apartments at Fredericksburg Rd & Callaghan Rd. Believe it changed to a Latin club shortly after.

Gosh....there were some crazy things you couldn't buy at the grocery store. I can't remember, something like hardware....or you could buy nails, but not the hammer (so you wouldn't 'work' on Sunday) No wonder Monday night football evolved. All those "honey do" lists on Sundays when they repealed the BLUE LAWS!

Oh, the dreadful Blue Laws! If there were certain health items you needed, you just had to do without them on Sundays. Very inconvenient.

Who remembers going to the movies in North Star Mall? I believe they opened the theater in 1965, because I saw "Doctor Zhivago" there not long after it opened. Not sure when it closed. This might have still been when Wolff & Marx was in the mall. Joske's came years later.

Remember that neat little art display in front of Frost Bros.? As a kid, I used to love hanging around in there, checking out the sculptures. That's one of my favorite North Star Mall memories -- up there with the baby alligator tank in Kresge's pet department and the live shows the mall hosted on occasion. One night my parents took me to a Polynesian revue, complete with fire dancers. Another night we saw Danny Kaye. He stepped out onto the balcony (again, near Frost Bros.) and waved to the crowd.

Speaking of Kresge's, they had the most wonderful submarine sandwiches. Try as I might, I've never been able to duplicate them.

There might've been a Dacbert's on San Pedro. I only remember the one that was on Nogalitos right next to I-35 just south of downtown. It had a fence with the store's name painted on it in big letters. I remember they had a jingle for their Tv commercial where at the end of the song the instrumentation gets all erratic and comes to crashing halt.

Nogalitos and I-35 - to me that was near the rendering plant. Where they butchered the cows. I think there was a Roeglein processing facility around there.

Default Remember MAMMY'S CAFETERIA?

Hello everyone---

There was a Shaw's Jewelers in Wonderland mall also. In later years the mall began having a flea market inside the mall on Sunday's I believe. Shortly afterwards they moved the flea market to the parking lot behind the mall.
Does anyone remember MAMMY'S CAFETERIA? It was located on Fredericksburg road and Gramercy Avenue if I remember correctly. Myself and my family (I was in my early teens) used to go there after church with some other church members. What made Mammy's so special was the price of it's food. All you could eat for $.99!! Well I'll share an experience concerning my adventures there. I was "chomping" on a piece of strawberry shortcake when I bit into something rather firm. I removed it from my mouth and to my surprize it was a cigarette filter!!!! I swear! I showed it to my father and he took it to the cashier. She responded by saying something such as "Oh I'm so sorry! Let me get your son another piece!" Uhhhhhh....don't think so! Good ole MAMMY'S CAFETERIA. I believe the Fredericksburg road bowling lanes were right across the street and to the right of those was a mini golf course located next to a Knowlton's milk distribution center..if I'm correct.

Does anyone remember Brandeis Book Sales which occurred twice a year at Central Park Mall? Twice a year an entire half of the lower floor level of the mall would be covered with tables of used books. I first remember going there in the early 1980's and it lasted until the mall closed a few years ago. So it must have gone on for 20 years or more.

I remember the Brandeis Book sales even before that. I think I was in junior high when I went and that would have been in the mid 70s. So who knows when they started.
