The Crystal Pistol is now a massage parlor or accupunture center. I spent many a teenage night there and some afternoons. If I remember correctly, at lunch, a mug of beer was 50 cents as were the hamburgers. Then, I would stagger home down the street. The Pistol was one of the greatest places around. Preppies, bikers, and everyone else got along and listened to loud music (At night) and had a great time.

Gruene Hall is still there. I took those pics about a month ago. I'm trying to get some of the people at this forum to party there in April.

DeSoto, the main focus in that picture is my work,
the background stuff is for the most part reproductions
from various downtown theatres.

Yes, it is difficult to accept the finality of Charles' departure.
But, the fact is, it has been right at one year ago. RIP

The piece of work you see in that picture is a small part
of a commision that I executed for Las Casas,
at the Majestic Theatre.

They brought me an 8x10 mimeograph copy
of a black and white photograph taken there in the 1940s.
Asked me if I could reproduce it, as it had been
destroyed in the 50s to make room for a concession stand.

I told them I could, and it took two years.

The photo below, is an installation shot (2003), not quite completed.
(The colors shown here do not do justice)
It all began as white powdered plaster in a bag.
Just add water.

And the third: the name of the lounge opposite side of West Avenue
and close to Jacala.
In the early 60’s (we were in our early 20’s)
there were a lot of 40 plus women that were divorced
or running around and they would mob you when you entered the door.

The Blue Note was at the first intersection south of Hildebrand,
on the east side of Blanco Road.

I believe the Melody Lounge was downtown,
maybe Broadway and 3rd.

The third Lounge was, I do believe, La Kantina.

Cent, I sure do remember The Pistol.
You say it is a massage parlor now??
Rumor has it that way back when, (1950s),
it was also a "massage" parlor.

You are right, a wide variety of folks could be found
in there at any given time.

One story I can tell - 6-8 of us were in there one night,
and our motorcycles were parked right out front.
I think there had been some sort of incident recently
involving Fat Richard (Balcones Heights character RIP).
So the owner and his son had it in for the sickle crowd.

Anyway, the son told us we had to park our machines across the street.
Myself, and two others said fork it and we just left for greener pastures.
One other guy pushed his sickle, pushed it, across the street.

Well, it was a setup.

They had already called the cops.

The guy pushing his machine got a ticket for no helmet.

The three of us got pulled over a half block away,
and we all got loud pipe tickets.
