I would guess that it was open in the early seventies. There was a Burger Chef right next to it. I believe that became a bank. They opened about the same time.
Might have been late 70's or early 80's. Don't quite recall Burger Chef but was probably same location as El Toro. Before or after of course. The Bank (don't recall it's current name) then Harlandale Bank (Bank of America) drive through tellers and then defunct Barnacle Bill's. Subway's in there somewhere.

Joske's has been around since late 1800's. Think it started in same location but small with a theater attached (Palace) I think. Then kept expanding until it put the squeese on the little church next to it. Unable to buy them out it kept building around it. They had a satellite store in Las Palmas on the Westside. Castroville & Gen. McMullin I believe. May have had a store in Dallas or Houston. They had a warehouse here off Probandt next to RR tracks.

Burger Chef and Ole Toro co-existed at the same time. Burger Chef later became a bank. They were located on Military Drive right next to the traffic light catty corner from the old Handy Andy. The El Norteno record shop was next door.

Barnacle Bill's was a block down next to where the K-Mart was.

Does anyone remember the Sunshine Amusement Park on Roosevelt next to (just south of) Southcross? When I was very young (50's early 60's) it was just to the side of Trail Drive-in's entrance. About where Taco Cabana is. There was a church at the time where Pep Boys is.

O.K. must have been where the Federal something or other bank is. BTW , that record shops been there a million years. Under different names . 2 or 3 years ago i went down the little road at the side of the record shop to get to the back of SCM and there was a mud puddle there along side the bldg. I almost lost my Suburban in that thing! Must have been three feet deep!

I think sunshine amusement park was ran by a shady person who ran drugs and other not so legal stuff through it. He may of been related, brothers(?), with the person who was ran a similar park on Broadway....next to the zoo. I remember it being all scumy and smelled bad. And rides were not safe. They were rusted and always broke down.

Not the first time I've been through there but wow!
I think so the dmv registration is still there. There was a Pier One Imports in Shoppers City Mall in the 70's.
