We were nearly out of gas and lost. There were black covers on all the gas pumps (signifying out of gas) for miles. We stopped at one station to get directions and the owner saw my husband get out of the car wearing his Navy uniform. He ran over, removed the cover, and filled our tank! He kept thanking Steve for serving.

Good man, yeah I thought it went up in the $ .70 range here too. We were married April 1975 coming up on our 34th. Well, next year!

Gas was $.75 a gallon when I graduated high school in 1977. I remember because I wrote that down in my memory book. I remember thinking I was going to go broke filling up my tank!

All My 3 kids were born in the Nix Hospital here. So was my wife. So was my grand daughter. Someone had posted on another forum that the Nix was the first air conditioned bldg in town or something to that effect. To my understanding the Milam Bldg. was first air conditioned bldg. or high rise bldg. in the city maybe the country. The Nix was the first high rise hospital & the first with a built in parking garage. See, I read all this stuff and try to absorb the information . But, I think my sponge is full.

Anyway, this caused me to double check my memory. Found out the Nix Dairy Farm is now the site of most of the South Texas Medical Center & Oak Hill's Country Club. Also, the Nix family was of course in on the building of the Nix Hospital and what used to be the Medical Arts Bldg.( now Emily Morgan Hotel ) . He had Atlee Ayers a very Prominent architect , design a house for him in King William. Atlee Ayers did the Municipal Auditorium and the Majestic Theater. At some point the Nix family moved into the Penthouse above Majestic Theater. Which is a multi floored bldg.Whew!!!

Husband's 4 year Navy commitment to pay for his UT scholarship morphed into a 20 year career. By then, our daughters wanted to stay in Virginia for college. Once he retires from his second career, we will move back to "somewhere in the hill country" between Austin and San Antonio. The sooner I build my business there, the sooner he'll retire.

At that point, I hope to be able to say we'll never leave again! Other than his career, nothing is keeping us here. Daughters live in Florida and Denmark so my only requirement is an airport nearby!

That's what I need is a memory book. Except ,I hate to write so it wouldn't help. As a matter of fact I hate this typing stuff! If I could do it like my wife or kids I wouldn't mind. They have to come in here and fan the keyboard once in a while to keep it cool.

Denmark!! WoW!! That's gettin' out there. It' nice up around Kerrville way. One r or two can't remember. If I had Plenty money I'd get out in the boonies somewhere. But, I'd probably not get out of San Antonio range. My two boys are in Valencia , California. Coming to visit for a week in about two weeks. To save money this time they're going to fly in and out of Austin. I'll have to go get them of course. Haven't been to Austin in many years. Wife's brother went to UT Austin.

Default Grocery Store on San Pedro

Does anybody remember Homon's Grocery Store on San Pedro, close to the Olmos Theater? I remember shopping there as a VERY young child and we took a field trip there when I was in kindergarten at Asbury Methodist Church. I think I remember some blue tile work.
