My folks met at Lackland AFB in late 1959. They had their first date at Valerio's. Their second date was at a Chinese restaurant that a lot of military personnel frequented. It might have been near Valerio's. Does anyone know the name? Thanks!

Help please! How do I start a new thread? And, how do I put a saying underneath my member name? Thanks again!

I worked for one day at a place I think was Sambo's. It was on 10/West Ave. When did they phase out Sambo's?

Where were these places located to the best of your knowledge. You are talking about 1959??

Valerios was located at 3820 Broadway. Excellent Italian food! IHOP is at that address now.

Could the Chinese restaurant have been Hung Fong? They have been around a long time, but I don't know how long. Their address is 3624 Broadway.

I seriously doubt any business, especially a restaurant, here in 1959 would still exist. Schilo's downtown might be an exception. There used to be a Vietnamese Restaurant across from Brackenridge Park on Broadway. Late 50's and early 60's there were motorcycle rentals up and down Broadway. Catered mostly to Military here.

Thanks everyone! I repped you all. Snowglobe you are probably right on with Hung Fong. I read a restaurant review that said, "Hung Fong has been serving Moo Goo Gai Pan to the Alamo City since 1939." Wow! I believe that a lot of military personnel frequented the restaurants on Broadway, Brackenridge Park, the zoo, and the downtown area during the time my folks were stationed at Lackland AFB(1959). I lived in San Antonio twice(1974-1976) and (1979-1993), so I actually got to eat at the restaurant where my parents had their first date(Valerio's). It was very good. Does any one know when they closed and turned into IHOP?

I thought there was a photo floating around of Hung Fong. Maybe in paper clip next to this thread in S.A. forums list.

Ralph Broncusio (sp) worked for Valerio's before having a culinary disagreement and opening Naples in the early 1950's.

You guys never heard of Maury Maverick Fong? The neon flags on the ceiling are a San Antonio treasure.

What was the name of the Mexican restaurant on Broadway that had a lot of the Aztec Theatre Aztec artifacts? It was owned by artist, Alberto Mijangos, former cultural attache at the Mexican Consulate, and San Antonio Artist of the Year. Was it "Mijango's"?
