We may be moving to the San Antonio area at the end of the year. I'm looking for info and opinions on the best areas to live in, suburbs preferably. We live on the outskirts of Wichita, KS right now. I like large lots but something that's affordable and a quiet country feel but close to things to do (and close to Lackland). Any suggestions?
Also it looks like there are a lot of poorly scored elementary schools sadly. Why is that? What schools do you consider the best? Right now I homeschool my kids through Wichita's virtual school program. Is a program like that available through San Antonio?

One more thing, how long does it take to drive to the closest beach?

Thanks!

What do you consider affordable? Where will you be working?

Closest beach is Corpus at about 3 hours, depending on where you live in the city. It really isnt a very nice beach IMO.

Link to homeschooling option: Texas Virtual Academy | Welcome to Texas Virtual Academy!. COuntry feel but close to Lackland would probably be Castoville of Medina Valley. The closest "beach" will be Corpus and from far west SA, where you would be living it would be about a 2 1/2 hour drive.

Texas has online public schools. The requirements are that the students are in 3rd grade or higher and have been enrolled in a Texas public school before making the switch. I have heard of people enrolling their kids for one or two days to meet the requirements. The schools can tell you more about that. My kids go to TX Connections Academy and we like it.

What is a "virtual school"? Is that some new age, trendy name for homeschooling?

A virtual school is an online curriculum, intended to be monitored by a parent. It is basically a charter school, as it is funded by the state (but not run by the state). It is akin to homeschooling, but the parent does not direct the curriculum.

Default Areas in SA

Dear IMemac,

One of the great things about San Antonio is that you can find affordable living on large lots/land outside of the city-center; i.e. country living within 20 minutes to 1 hour away, depending on the area. Personally, I've relocated 3 times in my life. Chicago to Phoenix to Los Angeles to San Antonio...in that order! I've lived here for 20 years and I LOVE it. This city is experiencing a renaissance of sorts with tremendous economic and cultural growth. The area north of Lackland off Hwy 151 is called Alamo Ranch. Lots of new development there. Also, as an interesting FYI Google Lone Star Brewery Re-Development.
There are many options for good schools and for home-schoolers [Mod cut: no advertising]
Also, check out Helotes and the areas around 1604 and IH-10. I know it's a lot to digest. [Mod cut: please don't violate our forum ToS]

p.s. South Padre Island is a 5 hour drive - lovely
Port Aransas is about 2 1/2 hours. Beaches not as nice as SPI but fun for family/kids.
